Before all the money came along, staying in the top division probably wasn't the be-all and end-all that it seems to be today. It is obviously nice not to be relegated, but to only win a handful of games every season to achieve this is rather depressing and difficult to watch.
I am not suggesting that relegation would be a good thing (far from it), but some of our most exciting and entertaining recent seasons have been in the lower division (e.g. 97-8, 98-9), where we actually got to witness winning football.
Our problem this season is that we seem to be set up not to take a tonking ala Southampton away. This makes us very slow to start matches and we end up chasing the game with fewer attacking options or getting a lot of 0-0 draws when the opposition are of a similar mindset.
I agree that Sutton is trying to be deliberately controversial, but I am going to rise to it and say, if we pay good money to watch our team play at the highest level, we want a decent level of entertainment and competitiveness. We don't just turn up to be entertained by the attacking skills of the opposition.
