GUS POYET has hit out at former team-mate Chris Sutton for comparing Sunderland to a “pub team” during their dismal defeat to Aston Villa.

Sutton, who played alongside Poyet at Chelsea, blasted Sunderland for starting the second half of their 4-0 loss to Villa with 10 men, when Seb Larsson was receiving stitches to an ankle injury.

It took Larsson more than three minutes of the second half to reappear, prompting BBC pundit Sutton to say: “It’s like a pub team starting without a player who is having a *** in the car park.”

But Poyet hit back at Sutton, with Larsson completing the full 90 minutes and still sporting a significant limp afterwards.

Poyet said: “I have seen a piece of information that came out where someone accused us of being a pub team and suggested that Seb Larsson was having a *** in the car park.

“I think you need to be careful, because people read and trust what you put out - more than you think.

“They say ‘it’s true, because I heard it in the news’ or ‘I read it in the newspaper’.

“Seb Larsson is one of the biggest and best professionals we have got in the football club.

    He's at it again <bubbly>

More proof if it was needed that Gus is incapable of understanding what anyone is saying to him.

Yes I do. :emoticon-0100-smile He suffered yesterday a they all did from a rank bad game plan, if there was one. There was not eleven bad players out there, just a dis-organised team.

I agree the whole team was a joke but players like Bridcock will take you no where.

The sooner we stop buying has beens and championship rubbish the better for sunderland.

I don't find Shearer that interesting as a commentator but I do think he doesn't feel the need to be 'controversial' in the way others do. Probably because with his England career he is an obvious choice for punditry whereas Sutton may feel he has to come out with headline grabbing comments so people don't forget he exists.

Shearer mostly just comes out with obvious comments most people are thinking but in a fairly dull way. I guess you do need someone to state the obvious and he's less annoying than many. How do you find him when he comments on Sunderland? He varies with Newcastle as he makes no attempt to hide his allegiance and yet also clearly dislikes the owner and doesn't want to see us do "too well" under Ashley.
