In the instances I mention though, particularly Clarke, how do you avoid that low morale? The only way is to sell him to Burnley as that is what he presumably wants since he’s had his agent actively encouraging bids from them from the moment the playoff semi ended.

It’s not viable to compete with the Prem teams on wages (Burnley would apparently double his current package). So then you have to rely on the players acting professionally and returning some of that good faith.

I can imagine it’s difficult to see those additional wages being waved at you but he didn’t have to sign the contract he did with us, it works both ways, and it was beneficial to him to have that on those terms at that time.
I genuinely don't think we sell Clarke unless it's absolutely ridiculous money. I'm.talking 30m. Even 15m is laughable. Look across England and tell me someone as good as Clarke we could get for 15m? Someone who has proved it every week with goals, assists, robustness and ****ing quality. There is **** all. And hes 3 years on his deal.

For me I understand it. Where is he ? 3rd choice? 2nd choice at best ?

What is his starting place, ahead of who ?

Lad wants to play football, can we give that to him ? I'm not sure we can.

Emotionally I'm gutted he's leaving, but pragmatically? I understand it.
2nd choice at RB and RW, but can cover LB and LW

If we lose Roberts then he's likely first choice RW and you know we will have injuries at LB this season.
Good player for the bench IMHO

Anyway, appears it's done now so no point me whinging

Good luck Lynden, you and your mad accent

Gooch is the one that makes little sense. Batth in nearly 33 and Pritch spends half his life on the treatment table, but Gooch is only 27, covers a variety of positions and has never give less than 100%. Surely he was worth another year or 2? Especially when we've just given a 4 year deal to a lad who is a year older than him!

Maybe Mowbray just doesn't rate him. Otherwise, it's baffling
I like Gooch, Yes he is very versatile, but he doesn’t excel in any position, he has one good game 10, in my opinion, of course. Yes he would die for sunderland, but is that enough, if we want to move up another level.

I'd suggest everyone gives OTR a miss today. Will be carnage as soon as Stewart leaves :emoticon-0140-rofl:
He's already gone for me marra...6 months ago when he didn't sign his improved contract. For me, because he has been out with one thing or another for nearly a year, its as though he has never been here. Nowadays Players are a commodity to Buy, Use & Sell, when you have had the best out of them not like the old days when they stayed around for testimonials and the like...

Absolutely agree with this. It's unusual for us to like a player and still think it's a good move for him and the club.

There's a huge argument to be made that versatility is far less important now that you are allowed a bigger bench. You can have a specialist for just about every role.

To me Gooch is behind Huggins and Alese as full back cover. I also think we can move to a back 3 before playing Gooch. I love the fella but I'm ok with him leaving if that's what's best for him.

I disagree mind, thought he played very well last season considering he gets moved about a lot. All started with that lovely run and perfect cross for Clarke to nod home on the opening day against Coventry.
