I wonder if Gooch himself, or Mowbray see him as a right back. I am not so sure. He is a utility man these days, in the mold of some of the good old fashioned utility players. He can play either full back role, wide right and even wide left at a push. Maybe in the 9 sub era this sort of player is less valuable, but I wouldnt be selling him just on the basis he is a 3rd choice right back. Not saying you are guilty of this but there are a few who have been on his case for a while now saying he is not good enough. I disagree, he is good enough to be in the squad. People are in danger of seeing off the character in our squad that makes it easy for young lads to flourish anf feel at home. The value of Gooch and ONien extends far beyond 90mins on a Saturday, in my opinion. A squad of 22 or 23 needs a range of characters, Gooch is a leader and a heart on the sleeve lad.
Gooch is the new Darren Williams

They can't just buy him back because they decide they want to
That's kind of how buy back clauses work. Just look at Xavi Simons.

PSG bought him back from PSV and loaning him to RB Leipzig.

Obviously the player has to want to and Spurs need defenders. Ange would love Cirkin his sort of player all over.

always a tricky one wondering who might be leaving and which ones we would be 'happy to lose' and this one is very much harder (for me, anyway) as i cannot think of a single one i don't mind going.

(EDIT: just realised i wrote this completely wrong..i meant, of course, i cannot think of a single one i WOULD want to go)

batth, pritchard, gooch, evans, onien all been mentioned...batth excellent last season just by doing his job and doing it well, worked well especially with ballard but any other partner he had to play alongside so probably the main one i would prefer to keep...pritchard, love watching the lad in full flow, always wanting to press and loves getting in and winning the ball although 90 minutes seems to take it out of him now...evans is exactly the type of lad you want in there (and a damn good teacher for neil) but when an injury takes so long to recover from it makes you wonder if he will return as good, not really known for legging it about the pitch so i presume he will be ok...onien and gooch, i have stuck up for both many a time on here and also called them both out at times, dependable and willing to play anywhere on the pitch, neither are world beaters and both always seem to have a mistake or two in them, the old terms 'sweat red and white' and 'run through a wall for the team' have never referred to two players more than with these two yet if some were to go these would have to be my first on the list, much as it pains me to say it but the choices are so difficult.

He’s garbage and we have Hume, Huggins and Crompton who can all play there naturally plus O’nien. Probably a decent lad to have in the dressing room but he should be nowhere near our Xl if we’re serious about promotion.
Na he's not garbage. Being a 60 odd year old Sunderland supporter I should know I’ve seen my fair share of Garbage the likes of Grigg were garbage he coudn't be arsed. Gooch May be limited and does make the odd awful mistake but works his socks off never hides and has produced some great stuff He may have to move on as we develop but he’s not garbage

Always down to the player though

I think that’s the thing though, he’s not judged on his footballing ability he’s judged on his work rate and loyalty to the club - both of those are unquestionable, nor is his importance in the dressing room.

But Cirkin is currently a decent championship standard full back, Gooch is absolutely nowhere near that standard. So many games last season teams would come to the SoL and everything seemed to go down our right.

I love Gooch, but you are right

Can’t disagree with that. Just thought garbage did him a massive disservice. With the likes of Hume and Huggins kicking on I think he will play less Will be interesting to see if the club are happy for him to move on

Gooch.

It seems Stoke, Preston and QPR are interested.

Some people think he's not very good.

Does that mean those three teams are inferior?

Great news.
He, like Embleton and O9 are players that I think we need to retain as options off the bench and players who would never let us down. Big characters off the pitch and (in the case of Gooch and Embo) massive Sunderland fans. Not to be underestimated

I think we’ve generally been better with Gooch in the side since we were relegated to league one and personally think dropping him in the run in under was was a massive contributor to us not being promoted at the first attempt. I’m not convinced he’s third choice RB, for all that he looks excellent when fit I think that’s Huggins, we can’t, yet, have any confidence he’s going to be available. I’d definitely keep Gooch.
