Who's son was struggling to settle up here, so there were 3 choices
1 force the son to live and go to school where he's unhappy.
2 let your family move back to London and you stay here and be lucky if you see them once a week.
3 let him go back to a club in London where him and his family will be happy.
There's no point having a player who's home life is so upside down he will not be able to train and play to the best of his ability.
He absolutely love his time here but if it was me I'd be exactly the same , the most important thing is that my family is happy and I'll do whatever it takes to do that.
I don't think anyone in there right mind would stay in a job that was causing so many problems for their family just to keep the customers happy, which is basically what we are

I wouldn’t take the job in the first place and I’ve done my fair share of graft away from home. Plenty of people with kids work away from home on much less than footballers and make it work. I wouldn’t accept a job working away from my family then moan that I’m homesick a few months later.

I’m not saying that’s the case with Bathh by the way, it could be any amount of reasons.

From the article:

"We have to be clear here: the model is to create a team that can get promoted."

"The by-product of that is having good players, and if you don't get promoted, some players will go past you. They are Premier League-ready, and the team won't be. Likewise, if you progress, there'll be players who won't keep pace."

Sunderland ended the season as the 26th-best club in England, which may not sound great considering they were 10th in average home attendance if the play-off v Luton is included.

Fish paste reporting that Batth, Pritchard and Gooch have all been told their contracts won’t be renewed next summer. And so will maybe be sold this.

Does Michael have a good record for breaking news like this... seems a heavy-handed approach when maintaining the balance of the team would be more important

Think every one is different mate, I think it was more the case of his family didn't settle rather than him, so he probably didn't take the move thinking he would be away from his family.
A lot of people have the view that footballers are on loads of money so they should just get on with it but if you can get the same kind of money and keep his family happy I can understand the move.
I quite recently got offered a job for **** loads of money, it would mean working abroad for a few weeks at a time which I quite liked the sound of, however the reason you got **** loads of money was because when you got out there it might not just be a couple of weeks, the lad that was going to get me the job and would be my boss got sent to Spain in early October for 2 weeks, he didn't come home till march. I know it's an extreme example but sometimes money isn't everything

Just an aside, something in that Speakman article jogged my thinking

Part of our problem last couple of years has been our home form. Because clubs always raise their games coming and playing in front of a big crowd.

I reckon having more “big clubs” in the division this season, with more big stadiums, will help us with that. Coming to the SoL won’t feel as special and an occasion for visiting teams when they’ve been to Elland Road, Hillsboro, St Mary’s, Walkers Stadium etc

I agree on this, not to mention the likes of Leeds and Leicester aren’t like ‘wow it’s Sunderland look at this place’

We should have a lot more space at home in a lot more games.

It’s very unlikely we will be telling players their contracts won’t be renewed when they have a full season left on them.

Something like that could affect moral of both the individual players and the squad as a whole especially with these senior players.

I call bullshit.

Yeh I think its more likely we've told them we won't start negotiating a new deal with them right now. Because with one year to go, now is the time you'd expect to. So the fact we aren't, might be being misinterpreted as telling them they wont get one. When indeed the message is probably "we can't guarantee it yet". Which I think is probably the right message for all of them except Batth, who I would be renewing for an extra year at least now.

It becomes trickier if Batth and Pritchard especially are saying they want to renew now for 3 years. At that point we absolutely shouldn't and wouldn't be wanting to do that.

Yeh none of us expected it - but it's actually quite nice to hear the club say it now. Hopefully allows some to move on so it doesn't come up regularly.

With my Sunderland hat off I'm excited to see how he progresses and where he goes next. Would love for him to stay at United and make a name for himself.

Yes. He's a player who deserves to play in the Premier League. He'll get better there as he did here, but I cantc ee him as inferior to Antony at Utd if he had thirty or so games in him.

Good post mate. Not exactly the same as your experience, but I took a job in France some years ago....good money and potential for more, free travel back and forth...but it ****ed up the life I had with the family...3 young kids at home. Gave it up after a year. Sometimes, family means more and I was happier at home with my wife and kids, even though I knew I'd given up a decent financial gain.
Haven't regretted it since!

Makes sense to me and I wouldn't see it as being demoralising. We want you hear next season, but won't renew further. Stay, have a great season, help the team, get interest in you services. Or, if you need more certainty, move this summer. I like things being black and white (apart from those scumbags). Players should know where they stand.

I doubt that's even the message.

I reckon the message is - we aren't ready to renew your contract yet as we want to make a decision closer to its expiry. Therefore we can't offer you long term security so if somebody bids we will consider it.

Good post. You need positive vibes not contracted slavery. It’s just a what if but what if his kids need their grandparents because their mum needs some help. You can’t say ‘tough ****’ because he’s strong at headers.

No. He doesn't
He has recently whether you like it or not.

Broke Dan Neil contract.
Broke 4 year deal for Bellingham. Also said when he was going to be at the SoL for pics and he indeed was.
Broke first bid for Clarke, with other outlets reporting shortly after.

Yeh fishpaste has been relatively accurate recently, at least based on the fact that other media outlets have reported what he;s been reporting shortly after him.

What he writes is often misinterpreted though. He's not saying we are trying to sell all three. In fact he says in his post its not expected we are trying to force them out. Just that all three have been told they wont be renewed. which as I've posted, I think is a misinterpretation that all three have been told they won't be renewed YET
