Ideally we sign players we want, before any sales. Much harder to agree a price if you have just banked £15m from a player sale. I would be surprised if we arent looking at overseas markets for these two deals, where we can get excellent players for much less than in the UK. If we then go and sell one that money can be used on other things like the academy, wages/bonuses.

I agree but, especially if we are signing long term players for the future, there's a risk to signing players now and securing them onto long deals that then tie us to them, when we could be playing in a different ball park financially if we are more patient.

100% agree with what you've said so its finding a balance.

I think also though if we’re signing from overseas and we might need them to start earlier is better. Especially forwards at this point.

Always take it with a pinch of salt especially with a recently registered user. I know we've been looking in the dutch market

Another poster (more reliable) has heard from a “reputable source” that we’re in talks for the lad. May be something in it.

He was. Play him as a 10, or up alomgside a striker and you'll see a totally different player. Being asked to lead the line every week up against 6'4" defenders does him no favours at all

I guess we'll find out this season if he is a good player or not.

Sunderland will look to repeat the success of last season's Premier League loan deals - but only if the budget is still there after their main summer recruitment drive, says Tony Mowbray. The Black Cats brought in Manchester United forward Amad and Everton striker Ellis Simms last summer and both players proved a huge hit on Wearside, while Joe Gelhardt joined from Leeds United in January and also made an important contribution as the club secured a play-off spot on its return to the Championship.https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spo...tony-mowbray-sets-out-sunderlands-27293288?t=

Agreed. Gelhardt showed a lot in those last few games, not least guts and putting the team ahead of himself.
