Don't want to appear Mr Glum but think us fans need to reign in our expectations a wee tiny bit.
I know it's not easy after years of living off crumbs so to speak we just need to keep our timber dry until we get a bit further into the season....sorry lads.

Nah, f**k that ...

... I'm excited and counting the days until I board the plane for QPR.

It's a 6am flight so I need to leave home at 2.30 am and I'm buzzing. I've had years of drudgery so there's no way I'm tempering my joy watching these amazing players.

I get your point but you can count me out, we're supposed to get excited, that's the point. What's the worst that can happen.

I think it’s inevitable we have some blips as overseas players bed in, that is my expectation. I suspect most are ready for that already.

I think as Smug said there is more excitement than expectation as we know the squad is young but we can also see the potential and that may well prove to be the most exciting thing to watch as some players will develop faster than others. Istill believe that confidence will be the turning point if our season because if these players get belief then the sky is the limit.

What do you mean by expectations? I expect a young group of lads to entertain us with exciting attacking football, whether counter attacking or more possession based. We've brought in several forwards, who should be suited to the style of football I, personally, want to see. I'm looking forward to the season and to see what we can do. As to expectations on finishing position at the end of the season? Well I think we could get play off spots or even higher but as long as I see a bunch of young lads giving their all on the pitch, then even if we go through a rough patch or two and don't quite make it I'll be happy.

I'm not expecting much from the season beyond staying up and the squad growing in quality as they develop, but the team is solid in terms of goalie, defence and midfield so I don't think there's any need to hold back excitement about the potential damage we can do.

I think it'll be a fun season and I wouldn't be surprised if we got promoted. Our foundations are solid (can Southampton say that?) and we've got loads of attacking talent.

Correct mate.

Even the ancient supporters, like myself, would struggle to recall a moment of such brilliance as Bennette setting up Rigg's goal ...

... that's what I expect and that's enough, promotion is a bonus not a condition of my enjoyment.

Screw that.. I'd rather be excited in the meantime than be miserable incase I'm disappointed.

Absolutely no fecking chance. Get carried away and excited any chance you have because experience has repeatedly (and repeatedly and repeatedly) shown us disappointment is usually the outcome so you may as well be happy before the event. Because I'm not 5 and I'm used to the crap fallout I recover quickly. So sod off with your caution and dry timber.

(Dry timber? What?)

65 yrs of watching promotions and relegations with a few Wembley trips along the way.
I think we're entitled to get excited about how the club is being run and the style of play we are producing.
40K plus supporting the new juggernaut of noise and passion and beautiful footy. so how can anybody stop us.
We're on the way up again and I'm loving every minute.

Feck that, enjoy what you have at this moment in time

Looking at Speakman’s interview, we’re of course aiming to finish as high as possible - hopefully top 6. Unlike years gone by, we won’t be doing that by grinding out turgid 1-0 wins. That’s one of the great things about this team. It’s not just about the end result but about enjoying the journey of how we get there.

“We’re always aiming for the highest position we can possibly achieve but we also want to make sure that behind the scenes, all those processes and hard working individuals are operating at a high level, they’re contributing, the culture is positive. I think once you start getting a mix of all those things, and a feel-good factor around the club and supporters understanding what we’re doing and why, then that starts to become something quite powerful. Hopefully that’s going to be the right mixture to get us elevated into a top six position but also in the future a top one or two position, that’s what we have to aspire to.”

@cumbrianmackem didn’t suggest that anyone shouldn’t be excited or enjoying what’s going on, I’m not sure why so many are responding in that vain.

The reason to manage expectations, which is what he did mention, is because when the fanbase convince themselves that we’ll, for example, be shoe ins for promotion this year, then if it fails to materialise the backlash becomes greater and more damaging. I’d like to see our fanbase never going on again like they did last Thursday but the likelihood of that increases the higher expectations are built.

I think most people can make their own minds up, I will get carried away, if it doesnt happen so what, live for the moment, we have had enough **** to deal with and I personally can cope with it, IF we dont achieve, well so what embrace the moment

It's like the difference between driving for hours in a draughty old wreck and sitting in a first class train carriage with a table and waiter service ...

... same journey, different experience.

On the train you can relax, enjoy the views and be happy if you have to repeat it.

Most people though weren’t capable of being rational last week when the fanbase (online at least) was in total meltdown.
