I agree, I think we should try and sign English talent where we can. Plus it's inspirational to our youth team, if all they see is foreign players, what kind of inspiration is it to them?, they will probably think "what chance do I stand", great for the national side as well and very patriotic!
Surely what is inspirational to young players is playing alongside players better than themselves? If they start relying on their nationality, or being home grown, to do them a favour they aren't going to make it I'd say.
i couldn't care less if they come from kathmandu, so long as they are better than what we currently have and want to do their best for the club. it's good to have english/british players but not if they aren't good enough. our squad is still predominantly british
It's all falling apart, Quagliarella not keen on Norwich move: http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/...-as-interest-moves-?xg_source=shorten_twitter Oh well he's old anyway!
you don't half jump to conclusions! there is nothing in that article to suggest he won't sign for norwich. so we might have to convince him to sign for the mighty norwich? quelle surprise!!
Sorry Supers, I keep trying to rid myself of my negative about Norwich attitude, but I can't shake my "little Norwich" mentality!
i don't think he'll sign. he's never played outside italy being the main reason, but i'm sure he'll come over with an open mind (he's coming over on thursday i believe) and its down to the club to convince him that he should spend the next three years here. i personally don't think we'll be able to convince him but its good that we're aiming high
In fairness the bloke is 30 and so it is likely that his next move will be his last so I completely understand him wanting to move to a bigger club than us for a last hurrah and a final payday. Unlike RvW and Fer he is not going to come to Norwich to use us as a springboard for his career on to bigger things as by the time he has proven himself here he will be too old for most suitors. I still reckon Hooper is most liklely as his aspirations appear to match ours and he, like our other signings is young enough to "gamble" a couple of seasons in Norfolk to generate a career defining move IF he can prove himself in the PL.
I think that to say 'it's all falling apart' when we already have Redmond, Olsson, RvW and Fer signed up is a bit melodramatic. We're already at ana advanced stage compared to the team who finished last season in 11th place Whether we get Hooper, Tagliatelli or someone else on loan I think it's fair to say Hootun in't dunn yet, bor.
As we bid far more than £5 mill for Hooper at Xmas allegedly if mrH wants him he will just get him now, if he has other options of something better why buy the first thing that comes along
hmm, not exactly the first thing that comes along. the club have been planning this transfer for months! it doesn't look good at the moment - we seem to be hoping that hooper rejects qpr in the hope that celtic give in to our bid. i'd have thought the last thing we'd want is qpr offering terms - they can offer him more than us (they shouldn't be able to but we know that qpr do what qpr want)
I agree with all this and whilst I also think it ridiculously unlikely that he'll sign for us, the fact he is at least coming over to check us out must be in our favour. I don't remember too many players turning us down over the years after getting to this stage, certainly not in recent times, and in fact the comments are usually hugely positive with nearly every player we sign saying how pleasantly surprised they are with the facilities, fanbase, feel of the club etc - all our summer signings to date for example. The balmy weather this week certainly won't hurt either! Is he on twitter? Reckon we need to get working on him if he is, show him what NCFC is all about!
Supers I dont mind where players are form either but If we had the choice of two identical players with identical ages/price/skills I would prefer to sign a british player. I am all for us casting the net wider and getting better value for money. I did agree in my post saying that the English quota wont be an issue for us for a long time.
just a quick update on hooper, straight from the mouth of neil lennon, who states that things are "progressing" and that celtic are "still in talks with two clubs". he also said hooper will "leave within the next week". still could be some way to go on this one. had to laugh at 'arry earlier. he stated his interest in gary hooper before getting all annoyed that other managers are talking about his players (taarabt). little tiny bit hypocritical that, 'arry...
