I know but we could have still bidded whatever we wanted back then, and it would have been against the backdrop of them knowing there was a ceiling and the threat of losing him for less.

Now Bologna can be stubborn and say they want 30m. There's no burning platform for them.
The chances are we have been in negotiations with them since then

Id rather pay a little more but have it in longer installments and bonuses included in that than by €4 million less but it's all in a oner

If he was our no1 target we would have been speaking to him and Bologna for a while

Yeh completely agree. But the benefit of negotiating when he had a lower release clause would have been that Bologna would have been risking losing him for that release clause. They'd possibly have been more likely to accept a staggered 28m euro offer knowing that somebody else could come in and take him for 25m.

now they don't have that threat they can just keep putting the ball back in our court and ask for more. which is seemingly what's happening

Don't think the release clause will have made any difference in the negotiations unless we were going to pay it upfront. If we made it clear we weren't going too then Bologna would know it won't matter as part of negotiations

At the minute it's all just rumours so we have no idea what prices are being discussed

Could even be a new release clause in the new deal for all we know.

We would never have offered it, no. But somebody else might have. Bologna would have risked losing him for his release clause if they kept asking us for more money in a staggered deal. Now they're not risking anything. They can keep asking for more money from us.

Of course they can keep for more but we would have likely known if any other club was going to pay the release clause

The club will pay what we feel he is worth and structure it how we feel is best

I don't pay any attention whatsoever to what Regis says about transfers in press conferences. The guy is too good and careful and clever.

He's a joy to listen to when talking about everything else.

friend said he could be our Arsene,

He just seems an incredibly nice guy as well, along with his deep intelligence and thoughtfulness.

There aren't many managers I'd like to spend time with but he's one. Think he'd be amazing to work for either as a player or staff member.

I also absolutlely love when he loses it when we score. About 5 seconds of furious fist pumping before getting back into the quiet zone.

I saw the sky clips of him celebrating the goals on Saturday, he gets wilder with every goal knowing the result is safe hahahah

bet he has some stories,

I know what you mean, seems like someone you can have a proper chat over a glass of red wine ( he seems fancy) and just chat.

his celebrations and how he was after the whistle at the PO showed me that its not about him, its the players, he didnt want the limelight
