In a way it’s hard to see him not joining now but that said we could easily have another signing that just doesn’t leak until it’s done and goalkeeper would be one of them

Sunderland want Aaron Ramsdale as Southampton look to break even on the England shot-stopper
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Sunderland have turned their attention to England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to become their new number one.

As previously confirmed by TBR Football, Regis Le Bris is keen to replace Anthony Patterson, with Ramsdale regarded as a viable successor to the Sunderland-born goalkeeper.

We understand Sunderland are stepping up their efforts on Ramsdale and they have already had contact with his representatives, who in principle have confirmed he is open to moving to the North East.

Ramsdale is eager to remain in the Premier League this season to consolidate any chances of an England call-up, and Southampton have agreed to let him leave.

We also understand that the Saints are not opposed to a loan move for the goalkeeper, which is of interest to Rangers, whilst Leeds United have also shown interest in Ramsdale.

We can confirm that Sunderland are readying an opening offer which is going to be close to Southampton’s current asking price. The Saints want the £25million they paid Arsenal for Ramsdale last summer to break even.

Ramsdale suffered relegation with Southampton last season, where he conceded 66 goals in 30 appearances.

Aaron Ramsdale’s Premier League record may worry Sunderland fans
On paper, the potential acquisition of Aaron Ramsdale looks like a shrewd deal by Sunderland for a five-cap England man who is still just 27 years old.

However, Ramsdale has struggled previously in the Premier League, having suffered three relegations for separate clubs.

Ramsdale has dropped down to the Championship with Sheffield United, Bournemouth, and most recently Southampton – a feat that Sunderland fans will hope is not repeated once again.

A fee in the region of £25m is also a significant outlay for a goalkeeper whose side has just finished rock-bottom of the Premier League.

Ramsdale’s quality is clear to see, especially from his stint at Arsenal; however, Regis Le Bris will need to ensure that he can restore the confidence of the goalkeeper in order to make him an upgrade on Anthony Patterson.

I'm not convinced by this article at all. It reads like too much supposition, guess work and rumours, and the fact it cites Graeme Bailey is another reason to get dubious about it. It's not that I don't think that we might have enquired about him or be interested in him, but in no way can I see us paying £25 million as quoted. How can they "confirm" we're "readying an offer close to Southampton's asking price"? In no way is this site one if our favoured outlets for transfer news, unlike Fabrizio Romano or The Athletic. This smacks of lazy, click bait journalism, taking rumours and dressing it up as fact to make it sound more authentic than it is, and get some respectablity if it comes off. For f@cks sake it refers to Patterson as being Sunderland born, when he's from North Shields. If you can't get a basic fact like that right, it doesn't say much for your research.
And just to add, here's the thoughts of others on Reddit about Graeme Baile.

This was from the Hunter a SAFC supporting journalist who posts on RTG

I saw David Bruce at an event yesterday. He said he was confident we would add several more players before the start of the season. And he said we had the funds and space (within the FFP rules) to spend quite a bit more.
BTW, he spoke more generally about the commercial/business/fan engagement side of the club... he was bloody impressive!

I said it last year sometime on here. I genuinely believe that something special is happening to SAFC and I’m just happy that I’m around to see it start. More importantly my lad who is 24 will get to see it hopefully for a lot longer than me. Then if he has kids he can indoctrinate them into the ways of SAFC.

Ramsdale is better than Patto, he's a solid midtable Premier League player imo. But he would supposedly cost up to £25m and is allegedly on £100k a week.

Whilst I'd happily have him at the club, I wouldn't want him as our highest paid player by a distance which I imagine he would be.

In terms of priority for me, keeper is only 3rd.

CB, CF, GK, CB, Squad cover.

We seriously need a centre back in soon like. An instant starter too

I actually rated Ramsdale at Arsenal... I thought he was super unlucky to lose his place to Raya at the time. An Arsenal mate of mine was furious when that happened... But as Raya has proved his worth..he's since calmed down

Aye it was a surprise.

Raya went off like a rocket mind the improvement in him considering he wasn’t a kid was mental.

I'm not really a fan of Browne to be honest, but with that being said, he's probably right to fill the 6th midfielder spot. He's there for AFCON and emergency cover and specific situations off the bench. He's got experience, he's got consistency and he won't be shouting about lack of games.

The idea of 2 players for each position is great on paper but when you look at the reality, you have 114 starts for your midfield positions.

Assuming Le Feè gets the most starts (30) followed by Diarra and Neil (25) and then Rigg and Sadiki (15). That's 110 starts. That leaves Alan Browne with 4 starts through AFCOn/Injuries and maybe a cup appearance.

There's no midfielder good enough to start who will be happy with less than 10 games and you can't rotate the main group any more than I've already suggested and expect them to perform consistently and continue to develop.

People can swap Browne for Triantis or even Jones or Aleksic if they'd prefer.
Yeah indeed. I tend to think of it in minutes. We’ve got 42000 PL minutes to share around the squad. You expect our main 5 midfielders to be aiming for 3000 mins each in a successful season. Four of them should hit that level no bother. That doesn’t leave many for the rest of the entire squad, never mind a sixth midfielder. We basically need that 6th midfielder for between 500-800 mins each in- which is basically nowt.
