Whilst I think Isidor and Mayenda do suit playing against a high line, is it not naive to assume the best coaches in the world would allow that to happen? Even if we are underdogs teams will set up to mitigate our threat, whether they seem it small or not.
I think Mayenda is more likely to cause more of a threat as he seems to be able to do everything. One thing I’ll say is. Day by day, I’m starting to lean towards us getting a proper first choice CF in but then I battle with me wanting Mayenda to be given as many minutes as possible

We definitely need another striker but I think RLB will start the player whoever is making the biggest impact, if Mayenda is causing problems for defenders and racking up goals and assist he will play imo, even if we sign a £20m striker.

Just looking at the 3 promoted clubs summer windows last season.

All 3 of them did the boring 'buy English' and 'experience' thing and none of it worked. The only English signing for all 3 that was a major success was Delap for Ipswich.

You can make the case that each clubs best signing was from abroad. Fernandes for Southampton, El Khannouss for Leicester and Cajuste for Ipswich and none of them were that clubs most expensive deal. Signings like Ramsdale, Skipp and pretty much all the signings from the Championship just didn't work out.
I think there are nuances with all three that would have me thinking the English or Championship players werent the reason they didnt stay up.

Take Southampton. Harwood-Bellis, Ramsdale and Cameron Archer are premier league level in my opinion. Were they bought with Russell Martin in mind is a fair question. I thought their tfr approach destabilised their football style, but that doesnt mean they are poor players. Then they made the decision to replace Martin with someone that could never work. They failed to survive because their plan was incohesive in my opinion.

The Leicester. They failed to get the coaching decisions correct again. Cooper wasnt the worst pick, but Van Nistelrooy was. The players werent a million miles off, but tactically they were a shambles second half of the season.

Ipswich maybe the hardest to defend. They seemed to lose their personality, the one that had given them momentum for two seasons. They changed too much too fast. For me they are a perfect example of a club signing too many players in one go, after success. Southampton the same, but with slightly different consequences.

The one common thing all relegated sides had last year imo was instability. Leicester lost their head coach. Southampton sacked theirs and made a terrible decision on replacement.

The very thing we seem to have going in is stability. KLD and Speakman have a long known plan. They are sticking to it, and probably enhancing it. We have a core of players who are trusted by Regis. Regis himself is a revelation and may well bring 10 points by outsmarting some coaches. This stability, to me is crtlitical. Where players come from less so. There is talent to be had in England and Britain for sure.

Can’t blame anyone for fancying Como like. Not the worst gaff to live.

It’s a bit meh…..the cool kids live 30mins up the road….

On a serious note it’s good to see more british players going to other countries to play. I failed to get tickets for Como last season but will keep trying again next season. Such a unique ground.

I largely agree with your post but there's 2 things I'd disagree with.

Cameron Archer has made 74 Premier League appearance now and scored 6 goals. He's not good enough to lead the line for a struggling Premier League team. He may be a player who can make a bench impact for a team who create more (though Villa don't think so).

Cooper was a bad appointment for Leicester, not because of his ability but because of his allegiances. Leicester fans appeared to be split over his appointment from day 1 and those allegiances remove any grace period that fans may otherwise give a new coach.

Ipswich is trickier. They're getting a lot of stick for their policy, but I think the reality is that none of their squad were good enough. Momentum got them the double promotion but they're were their with a squad largely full of League One and Championship players without a lot of potential for development. Delap and Hutchinson were unquestionably good signings for them in my opinion. But they got a bit lost as the summer went on and were buying 2 players per position who were similar just because they were available. They ended up with too much mediocre depth.

Muric and Palmer
O'Shea and Greaves (rather than 1 and then some greater experience)
Philogene and Clarke
Then Hutchinson, Enciso, Smodzics and Ogbene.

The Ipswich lesson is the one we need to learn, but I don't think that lesson is "don't buy Championship players" which a lot of people seem to think. The lesson is to not spread your funds so thin across so many players.

This is why I think the 5 first team players approach with another 3/4 for competition is about right. To build a squad correctly takes multiple years and we have to accept that next season we'll probably have 5 or 6 players regularly around the squad who prove to be only Championship level - if these players are current players and not new signings, we'll be fine.

Getting as much of your money onto the pitch as often as possible is essential. We should attempt to spend as little as possible on squad depth. I’d much prefer our big money to be concentrated on 5 top players who are likely to play every week. It’s why I’m not that bothered about spending big money on a striker too.

I agree Ramsdale is PL quality, disagree on Archer and THB at this moment in time. The problem really is the fee. If Skipp was French he's costing £10m, THB is not a £20m+ defender at present, Archer is not a €17m striker, even Ramsdale isn't worth what they paid.

It's the directionless and unimaginative recruitment that, in my opinion, got them relegated. Huge fees on players that are just not worth it when some clever recruitment could've got them a lot more points.

I agree with this in bold. It’s who you sign not where they come from. They need to be the right players for the right positions. I’ve learnt in life that if you make generalisations you miss opportunities. If it was up to some we’d never sign anyone from any nationality because a player from there struggled once. I’m certain Fernandes or Hutchison would do well and they’re from relegated clubs. I’m sure there’s a couple of championship players, Price has been mentioned but I’ve heard he’s the new Healy even though he’s a different player in a different position and we have two doing well.

The club are appointing Ghisolfi to help attract quality players from abroad so I think it’s safe to assume we won’t see much business done from the PL or England (I prefer this)

I get what you are saying about Cooper and you probably right. I felt of all the squads going up theirs was most capable. I thought they went early on Cooper and I have no doubt at all they would have been more competitive with him than Van Nistelrooy, which was just a really lazy appointment imo.

I'll be disappointed if we aren't looking on our doorstep.

I agree the recruitment at Southampton and Ipswich was directionless. It was a scattergun approach and didnt seem at aligned to either the head coach (in Southamptons case) or the club mentality (in Ipswichs case).

Skipp isnt a bad footballer by any means. But he certainly didnt justify the price tag. Were they in need of home grown players last summer? That bumps a price. It is one of the reasons why our academy is ao key, buying home grown is naturally more expensive because of that rule.
