If it costs £2m a year to run the Academy, we have about £45- £50m from Henderson, Pickford and Watson plus anything between £35m to £75m to come from Neil, Patterson and Rigg.
About 50 years paid for from Academy lads alone and then there’s the ones coming through now, some looking very promising.

Our management is doing a brilliant job.
When you think about our deals (Hume, Jobe, Mundle, Wilson, Cirkin and the others such as Stewart) we must be the best run Club in the division.
Speakman deserves a huge amount of praise and there’s plenty of others all doing top quality work here.
KLD is doing something right.
Frightening the change in under 4 years of KLD. He’s doing very well for such a young age

Suddenly dawned on me that a wage increase, for signing to another club, isn’t really all that …

… most of our team could do that tbh.

But they’d need concrete offers to be put in for that situation to arise and I’m not sure we’ve had any for the group of better players. Plenty sniffing round but no offers. If someone came in and offered one of these lads £30k a week with a signing on bonus when they’ve been on £5-10k a week for the last few years and we can only offer £15k I don’t think anyone could blame them for leaving. Just part of the game and they need to look after themselves as do we a club.

Yeah I trust them too, and have the same concerns about they possible complaints.

I was just wondering if they used this sale to put more funds into the academy as he's an academy sale. For example, hoping 2 mill to the academy to cover the costs, or possibly 4 mill to cover 2 years and spread the rest accordingly.
I am not sure how they work the finances but would suspect things like scouting and the academy will be working on some kid of budgeting forecast and not specifically self funded, however I am pretty sure that like every big business they bean counters will be counting each bean and where it comes from to ensure that profits and expenditure are being maximised. So in answer I think we will continue to see the club invest heavily in youth and academy players as this does help with PSR and profitability.

Or they could do ‘a Watson’, refuse to sign a contact and make it openly clear they want to leave the club …

… that would do the trick and bring in concrete offers.

If it’s only, and always, about money then we've lost something fundamental. All the talk, from club and manager, about team spirit, connection, loyalty, etc is false.Thankfully it’s not as we saw when Jobe didn’t take the bait from Palace.

I’ve had a slight change in my thoughts on Watson tbh. I’m pretty sure he’s moved for purely selfish reasons which, to be fair, he’s perfectly entitled to do. So I’m going to be selfish and hope his move is a flop, he’s homesick and goes out on loan to Southampton.

If that encourages our next young star to spend a couple of seasons paying back all the time, care and effort, from Murty and the club, then selfishly I’m all for it. Selfishly I don’t want him straight into Brighton’s first team and picked for England.

And I don’t want him starting any games ahead of Mundle.

Totally agree mate. As long as I’ve a hole in my arse he’s not going into Brightons team next season. Not a chance. He will get totally bullied off PL full backs. He wants to run before he can walk. PL is a totally different game physically and as Brighton found out against Forest a few weeks back you can’t carry players who don’t put in the hard yards and track back.

I like to think there’s still decent footballers out there but money has poisoned the sport. Take Grealish for arguments sake. I still think he’s a very good footballer and he’d walk into most PL clubs and be their star player, I genuinely think that. But City paid £100m for him and he’s probably on £200k a week; A) is he going to be bothered about sitting on the bench when he’s getting paid that much, and B) which other PL club can afford to take him off their hands? Granted that’s top end of the scale but you’re seeing it more and more with young lads moving to PL clubs and barely kicking a ball. Everyone apparently idolises Brighton but how is what they’re doing any better? Signing up loads of kids for big money, big wages then having a squad full of young lads who can’t get a game and ultimately will get loaned out. It’s just a monopoly.

They have far better wingers than him that can’t get a game, and more out on loan.

Mitoma
March
Adingra
Minteh
Gruda.

Then on loan, who are either winger or can play out wide

Buanonotte
Enciso
Osman
Sima
Sarmiento

He’s certainly nowhere near the squad next season. But you struggle to see where he gets in even in 2-3 years really.

Got to have been a financial decision.

Aye exactly, wingers are one thing they aren’t short of. He’s nowhere near the level of Adingra at the minute and he plays on the left when Miriam isn’t on. Totally forgot about those out on loan too. He’s probably about 5th choice. Never going to happen like but would’ve loved Encisco coming the other way!

Yalcoué and Do-Young Yun as well who are in a similar bracket to Watson. I think he'll be loaned to one of their feeder clubs, USG in Belgium or maybe even Hearts

Aye, looks like they have taken a punt on the off chance he makes it.

I genuinely think Mundle has a more complete game. Also an element of Brighton now having a lot of foreign and might have needed some English quota.

Don't fancy Yalcouye as a winger but yeah the point stands that there is a whole lot of depth and players ahead of him there.

I believe Brighton have been following Watsons progress for about 3 years mate. This is a long term chase for them. I would be very surprised if Watson doesnt make the premier league grade and ultimately make the Brighton side, and likely the side at a bigger club.

It will be interesting to see what they do with him next season. My opinion is they will keep him for the first half of the season and see how he adapts to them and their style. If he needs game time second half he may go out on loan, but I would be surprised if they do that in the summer.

I hope he does mate. Don’t care what’s gone on it’s another glowing tick for our academy if he does.

Just looks a long road there.

Exactly mate, Watson going on to be a success will only see more youngstees choose our academy over others. Our club will only thrive and compete based on the success of our academy. I am gutted to see him leave as I really do think he is a talent. But the long term benefits to our overall club if he is a success could ge very important. I wish him all the luck in the world to be honest and will watch his career with pride.

95% agreed mate. There will be small amount of annoyance, for me, that he didn't stay longer and achieve more here*. I hope he is a resounding success though and flies the flag for the academy and north east football in general.

* That could change if he plays a part in getting us promoted though!
