Patterson is an excellent shot stopper.
Why can our goalkeeper coaches not help to get the other aspects of his game up to a better standard.
Kicking.
Can they put a target circle, about 6 feet diameter, about halfway in the opposition half near the touchline and have him spend a few hours a day simply kicking to get the ball to land in the circle. Surely after many hours of doing this he will be able to get his kicks right during the game.
Get the ball out quicker.
Instead of farting about at the back get the ball out as soon as possible. Other players need to make themselves available quicker to help him out.
Coming for the ball in set pieces.
Just tell him to go for the ball when it’s coming in within say 10 feet or so of him and to go through anybody in his way.
Keeping quiet.
Get somebody who can tell him to be much more vocal and to shout at the defenders “MY BALL” and the like. Give him the confidence to make the penalty area his own. I’m sure he’s not a shrinking violet so get him telt. Give him a pound of raw steak to eat just before the game or summat.
We surely have some goalkeeping coaches so why are they not improving the poor parts of his game.
If they are trying their hardest but he’s not responding then get rid.
He’s got the makings of a good keeper but is he being coached poorly?
We shouldn’t give up on him.
