I really wouldn't be surprised to see an early retirement. Real shame. Great business to sell him for what we did though.

Yeah real shame, I think he knew himself which is why he had to take the deal offered by Southampton.

Fingers crossed he gets back on track.

glad he got a contract that secured his future, deserved it and is an example of why I’d not begrudge anyone who does the same.

No brainer for the lad at his age was his last chance for a big contract. Anyone thinking otherwise and holding ill feeling toward him for that and pretending they wouldn’t do the same as a fibber. Real shame he hasn’t had a chance to prove himself in the prem, whilst it won’t have changed how bad Southampton are I think he could’ve proven himself for a better club to pick up at the end of the season.

I've only ever seen people wishing him well tbh.

He was great for us and I can only wish him the best, I feel the same about Jack Clarke, not so much his ****er of an agent

Agreed. Gutted for him, but I suppose the financial security would be of some comfort

Few of my mates in the group chat weren’t happy about him going mind calling him out for refusing to sign with us but you can’t blame the lad. The same few who spent 90 minutes calling Alex Neil worse than **** when he came back with Stoke instead of just cheering us on might I add <doh> I do sit in the roker end though so what I hear inside the ground is vastly different to what you’ll hear in the West I assure you of that! :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Was a great example of “the model”. Fairly unknown in Scotland bought in for peanuts, got us promoted then sold for a big fee. If only all transfers were that easy!

He’s done, knew it as soon as it was reported he’d torn his Achilles.
Aye, that photo of his knee at the AOL too. Absolutely loved him here, great a leading the line great defending the box from corners and a nightmare for CBS having such a lanky lad running at them all game. That brief period of him and Simms playing together was some of the best football I’ve seen Sunderland play ever

My marra used to go to the match then, he always thought Stewart ran about that much he would just drop down and die of a heart attack in the middle of a game. I dont think you could ever accuse him of not trying, I remember Wigan giving it the big one because they were paying massive wages for Wyke :) :) :) chumps (being polite)

It proved the club knew what they were doing, as you know when I messaged you at the time mate, only info I've ever had.
Both Stewart and the club wanted him to stay. The problem however was the situation and the club did the best for both parties. I wasn't what they wanted but as it's been proved both us and Stewart ended up with the best result, Southampton were the lovers.
I'm absolutely gutted for the lad, he worked hard to get to where he was and deserved a chance at the top level

Yeah. I remember saying that it would be unlikely he would come back to sustained fitness. His height and long limbs were always going to be a nightmare for that injury.
That's what made me laugh at the time mate, we had supporters either calling the club for not offering what Stewart wanted and others calling Stewart for being greedy when neither was the case.
Both parties wanted a new contract signed however both parties knew the best solution for both was for him to leave, generate a large fee for the club and a much improved contract for the player.
