Been away a bit coz I've had a stottin cold.

I remember spending the whole of last summer following every nuance of the transfer rumours thread and all I got out of it was a load of anxiety.

This summer I'm just going to sit back until the friendlies start and then see what happens.

In all honesty my interest until then will be centred around board and ownership machinations.

Sunderland line up fresh agreement with 25-year-old as Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, QPR and Rangers circle

As if he would be interested in any of those. He'll stay

I don't see the attraction of any of the Championship clubs. He may as well prove it with us and get a shot at a Premier League club if he really wanted to move on. We've no idea what kind of pull Rangers have, depends on his allegiances and what his ambitions are. We've got him under contract for this year and an option for next though, so even if he wanted to leave, I'd think we can play hardball and keep him this year unless we got £7-8m

All of that is hypothetical worst case though. I genuinely think he'll sign a new contract and stay. I also think he'll score as many in the Championship as he did in League One.

Rangers and Europe I think is the only pull, not to sound arrogant but why move to a championship club when he already plays for one of the biggest clubs in the division?

Agree mate. I dont see any championship clubs having the ability to get him. Prem clubs will want to see how he does this season IMO. Rangers I doubt have the money. For me it is a £12m starting price and even then I dont see us needing to panic with the 1 year option.

And he played for Celtic as a kid so unlikely to be massively drawn to Rangers from being a boyhood fan perspective, unless he was a boyhood fan of course

did ok the hoff in all honesty.

think he maybe lost a bit confidence after 'that run' but i cannot think of a single goal that was purely down to him, he was just caught up in a bad run for the whole team and being the man between the sticks it looks worse for him.

i always felt confident with him in there so i wish the lad well wherever he ends up (unless the mags nip in of course)

A young foreign GK that played in a team where the unwaivering attacking minded-ness of the manager left him with absolutely zero protection - no wonder his confidence fell away. Think he'd have been a different prospect behind an Alex Neil organised defence, but Patto has made that spot his own.

I think evolution rather than revolution is more important this summer than ever. The condensed season next year with the season starting a week earlier is going to make it more important to hit the ground running and with the disruption caused by a winter world cup, it could be useful to have a squad that is largely familiar with each other and our tactical approach so they slip straight back into a rhythm after the winter break.

In addition to that, I think we already have a good core in Wright, Baath, Evans, Pritchard and Stewart who I think will be comfortable starters at that level. Then we have youngsters who we want to develop in Neil, Embleton, Cirkin, Patterson, Huggins and Matete so we don't want to sign too many players in front of them that may harm that. Finally, we have players who are good characters and versatile options in Gooch and O'Nien.

Personally, I'd take up our option on Roberts, sign Broadhead and bring back Clarke on another loan as well.

That's 16 players for the squad already (with very low outlay), meaning we can pay for quality rather than quantity. Here's what I'd like:

An experienced goalkeeper with an eye on a coaching career that Patterson can learn from and provide a bit of competition - Dream signing is Ben Foster but unlikely.
A first choice Right back is probably the main focus in defence for me. Loan out Hume and allow Huggins to compete/cover both full back spots.
Another central defender, ideally with a bit of pace - Dream signing is Dion Sanderson.
Another addition to the midfield, someone with experience who can help to control a game - Dream signing is Conor Hourihane
A forward who is versatile and can play off the wing if needed. We need someone who can play up front but it's a challenge to sign someone of Championship quality who will sit behind Stewart and possibly Broadhead. Scully, Twine or Andy Weimann would be good options here, though I don't know if the latter 2 have realistic price tags.

Well thought out as usual, and good to see you back. <ok>

Clarke is an interesting one, rumours are Spurs are going to offer him a new deal then loan him out (hopefully back to us)

I wonder if actually playing first team games might tempt him to reject it and look for a team that can offer him that?

Clark is young hungry, and in the short time he was with us grew in stature, i would be very happy if we could loan him again. or even happier if we could buy him, as we already know what he can bring and how he will fit in the team, he is also no slouch and very quick in my eyes, it takes time to settle in and he has already done that, all i can see is positives
