Hopefully it was a case of no point in going out on loan, terminate for zero cost and let him sign on a permanent basis with Sheffield. Makes you wonder how league look at this as effectively circumventing the transfer window for permanent signings.

It doesn't really help us in the January market. In this window, it clears his salary from our books (and allows another salary to take its place)

In January we can only replace people we sell (like for like and at a reduced salary cost)...
So in fact this would not work in January, as if we terminate contract then we could not replace unless with a free on a smaller salary and could not replace with a defender either. Well that is my reading

Understand but my point re transfer window is Sheffield have signed a player who was tied to another club after closure of window They have done this as we terminated so he was free agent. Could be scenario where league say hang on he wasn’t really a free agent. In this instance I’m sure nothing dodgy in terms of financials but could see misuse of this between clubs.

You could be right. We did play him after the transfer window closed. I do not know.
But I think normal clubs (not those under FFP black clouds obviously) can pick up a free agent anytime

Yes and no.
Mostly no... Hoos arrived May 2015 (from Burnley...and look at how astute they are moneywise, and before that Leicester!!!)...
He arrived at the end of Ramseys first season. So he was here basically from the start of JFH reign. Jimmy Floyd bought some duffers I agree (Conor, El-Kiyate, Sylla) but it was NOT the same profligate spending as before...and we still had parachute payments then too.
Since Hoos has been here, we have been trimming and trimming our costs and expenditure. I still think he has done a good job...(remember it is manager/Sir Les who says I want this player, he has no say in who we bring in). It is his job to find the money or say no we cannot afford it.

I don't think there's anything in our Transfer Embargo that says we can't terminate contracts. and Sheffield Utd can pick up free agents.

I think it'll be something the League look at, but only really as a means of seeing if there's a loophole they need to close. Doubt there's anything they can do about this specific instance now.

I actually think that Washington might end up doing well. Never short of endeavour and he does seem to be able to create space for a shot. Not a natural finisher (nobody could contest that) but he needs a run, perhaps lose his air of desperation to score and get on a bit of a roll and he could settle at this level.

He'll either rot in the Blades reserves or he'll be another shining example of us not getting the best from our signings.

I agree with you on this. I'd have kept him ahead of Sylla for sure.

I still think he's a better player than many give him credit for. He became totally bereft of confidence from not scoring and that feeds on itself. I think he could still be a success at Championship level and really hope he comes good at Sheffield United.

Yep, ironically I think Stevey Mac would have been his best chance, over negative JFH and clueless Holloway.

Never mind, the majority have got their wish.

I agree, he's got pretty good touch and control and his work rate is always up there. He must have hit the woodwork more than any player in recent memory and having Smith save that one on the line was really just the icing in the cake. I don't think we are a good club to be at when you are a striker with brittle confidence. Wish him well.

Makes the space - nope, running tirelessly is not the same as taking up decisive positions.
Shows control - nope, the fact that his first touch nearly always took him further away from the goal is at the heart of his problems.
Doesn't seem to find the finish - 14 goals in 98 starts makes this a huge understatement. Has there ever been an out-and-out QPR striker with a worst goals to games stat?

He's made a mistake if he's off to Sheffield. He can still shine in League 1 or 2 but the Championship was a step to far for him[/

98 Starts! Are you sure?

Big shame for Washington that he couldn’t continue his progress. At just 26 he will have learned a lot in his time here. He needed a move to pick himself up and build his confidence . No doubt he worked hard. He needs to find his finishing touch again. Good luck to the lad.
The fact we effectively wrote off our investment is a sign of our (crazy) times. Bad choice? Bad handling? Who knows, it’s in the past ... move forward.
