Just so I understand the strategy, we got rid of players to save money and then we're going to loan back in a similar number of players anyway?

Are Wells and Hemed saving us money compared Mackie and JET or have we made a typical error of judgement and are trying to get out of it (at further expense to the club)?

Are we talking a similar strategy for the defence?

What material progress is there (Smithies 3.5 million fee is being stretched quite thin and presumably won't end up covering losses elsewhere)?
Depends on how much of the loanees salaries are paid by their home club. Sometimes it’s 100%.

Rumour had it that there was competition for Hemed. That doesn't usually result in free loans.

These days there is usually a fee involved too (although I think it might be more for the up and coming ones from the top part of the Premiership) but with our team of crack negotiators, who knows.

How the club can justify getting in loan players is beyond me ? Wages must be higher surely and of course they aren’t ours

Yes, it doesn't seem to square at all with our supposed business model of buying cheap and selling high. Whilst I am both very grateful and very relieved to belatedly get Hemed and Wells, it seems likely that we are paying loan fees and a substantial part, if not all, of their wages. And at the end of the season they go on their way. That's not investment, that's expense!

The Board must have done the arithmetic, surely, but Wells is probably worth £4-5 million and Hemed £2-3 million: its a shame that (some of) Smithies transfer fee couldn't have been used to buy one of these guys rather than just pay for their services.

But, then, I'm just an ex financial guru, what do I know?
