Currently Dan who can you think of?
Messi if he always stays at Barcelona.
RVP if he stays at Arsenal.
Lallana if he stays with us.

    Gerrard is one for Liverpool.

Name me a few others out of the current crop who you would class the same?.

Even Raul left Real in the end granted to keep playing and is a Madrid legend however this was in the twighlight of his career.

How many players these days play for the same team for 10-15 years?

Not trying to start an argument just making a point.

chamberlain left on relatively good terms and has spoken well of the club since. I'll give him a little clap if/when he plays against us next year

Why is playing for 10-15 years part of the criteria? Van Persie will probably go down as an Arsenal legend whether he stays or goes, provided he doesn't do it by giving Arsenal the middle finger a la Nasri. Henry was there for 8 years and is probably the biggest legend in the club's history despite moving away before the twilight of his career. Lambert is already a legend in the eyes of many fans, as is Kelvin.

Rooney at United, Lampard at Chelsea... by no means do you have to stay loyal to one club to be a legend.

Sorry Dan it just bugs me mate I am not saying you have to be a one man club throughout your career like Le Tiss, However these players these days who are happy to jump ship with the lure of money gets on my goat.

I know a footballers career is short in general working years but seriously the actions we see these days of strikes and hissy fits to gain moves is beyond me.

Chamberlain was never a Saints fan though, so you can't expect that degree of loyalty from him. I think most teams with decent youth setups produce plenty of loyal players who have the potential to become club legends. Lallana has a great chance of becoming one, and so do plenty of our up-and-coming youngsters like Shaw and Ward-Prowse.

And look at other clubs with successful academies. Crewe have plenty of long-serving players, Athletic Bilbao have tons. It's because their players are actually life-long supporters of the team.

He was a Portsmouth ST holder but now definitely prefers Saints.

Okay but how about players we've signed? If we sign this Powell from Crewe chap will you sympathise with Crewe fans and think he's a money/glory seeker for jumping up several leagues? How about Sharp and Lambert who bumped up wages significantly to join us? It's the same as someone like Chamberlain joining Arsenal but on a smaller scale.

Your response was just what I was looking for Joe, Granted clubs produce players who are not fans infact the majority are not.

However football has gone down in tradition in terms of club legends since I was born in the 60's, 70's and 80's my general opinion of footballers in my time or era is that money talks and its as simple as that.

Arsenal are willing to offer Van Persie a £5 million tax free signing on fee for a new contract ( 5 mill would break our transfer fee record ) just to stay but yet he may say ta-ta cause he can earn 1 million a month at City.

Sorry I know this isn't the thread for it but it just annoys me.

That's a great point Dan and one where I would say I would sympathise with the club we get the players from.

However if the player come out publicly or refused to play to get his move to us I wouldn't want him to become a Southampton player.

This is exactly the point, there is a natural pecking order due to how much a club is willing to pay in transfer fees and wages and therefore the top talent will always end up at the top clubs. Rooney left his lifelong team, Everton, to further his career, there is talk of Gareth Bale going to Barca. Saints will attract the best players from clubs on a lower level than itself with the lure of better wages and the chance of possible success in the top league ie...Europa league qualification and the cup competitions. It was unrealistic to expect Chamberlain to stay at the club for a long time.

I think if you went back to 60's/70's/80's and offered the "legends" to their clubs the kind of money you can get now, most of them would leave. Or is that just me being cynical?

Totally understand where your coming from buddy all I can say is if you put it all down to these things which is true then we all picked the wrong team to support in life instead of being a glory hunter.

Hooper when asked about the chance to play for England "I'd love to be called up for England. That's been my dream since I was a boy, along with playing in the Premiership"-Does this mean he wants to join saints?

Tbf, he kind of has to say that. I wouldn't be surprised if he would leave. After all, they're going to get knocked out in the qualifiers anyway!
