aye said this to my brother when watching. Last season it felt like even when the striker was free, our players were reluctant to pass it to him. This weekend they were passing to him as much as any other player.
Not sure strikers moved that well last season and when they did (egRusyn) couldn’t hold the ball because of physical weakness or unrefined first touch .

If we actually had a physical presence in the middle, you'd see us use that outlet, no point banging crosses in for Rusyn, who was probably our main striker last season.
He wasn’t really, he played the equivalent of eight games. Jobe probably played CF more than him.

Agree. No way the midfield/wingers weren’t playing balls into the box because they had nobody to aim for, they had just got used to playing without a striker and didn’t look up to play those balls often enough IMO.

Yep. I remember a few times when Clarke should have played it to Rusyn instead of doing his own thing.

Rusyn was on the shoulder quite a bit but rarely did the ball get put through for him. I can recall once at Swansea and his standing foot went as he shot and it skewed wide.

Very small sample size but I think we changed that on Saturday. Mayenda had 4 shots, 1 huge chance and 3 half chances. We looked to get the ball to him a whole lot more than last season as well, even if it didn't stick.
I'm think it was also glaringly obvious that we didn't hold it up particularly well..I think we need a bit of both

Jobe is listed on transfermarkt as having played 10 games as a striker last season. I'm not bothered enough to count his minutes to see how many time he completed the full game. Rusyn appeared in 21 games, I assume almost all of those appearances were as a striker.

I would be happy for us to pay that money for Stansfield btw. Less so for Mendy because he’s new to English football and older, I’d love Stansfield (or similar)

Isn't the issue with Stansfield he doesn't want to move this far North or was that just made up last time he turned us down?

Mendy training on his own is encouraging that the club obviously think he’s going to leave but less encouraging that he won’t be properly fit if he joins.

Cane’s first game of the season is this Saturday. Rowe at Norwich took himself out of contention as a clear signal that he wants to leave. If Mendy plays I would be surprised if he ends up at SAFC later in the window.

Obviously I am just assuming, but breach of contract will come around if he "refuses" to train wont it? young family he's hardly going to forego wages on a deal that may never happen

He’s got to make sure he hasn’t burned his bridges, he’s made it entirely clear that he wants to leave but it isn’t actually up to him and it’s better to be playing than training alone all summer. Magic Johnson is testimony to the damage a year of no competitive football can do when he left us.
