Is it just me who isn’t that fussed about this Philogene? I’m sure he’s a decent player but it sounds like we’re dropping £5 million on a kid who got the same amount of league goals and fewer assists last season than Longman did in the 21/22 season when he was on loan with us. Not saying Longman’s better at all but are there cheaper alternatives? If I remember correctly, we paid £750k for Longman on the back of that half-season when he got better goal contributions than Philogene did at Cardiff last season.

Just saying, £5 million is a lot for a Championship club with no parachute payments or big player sales to blow on one player. The whole buy-back thing seems like hard-nosed negotiating by Villa but at what point do we walk away and pursue other targets this late in the window?

There's more to football than just goals and assists. Jack Grealish is the most expensive winger in premier league history, yet his numbers are relatively poor in Man Citys team. Didn't stop him being a vital cog in a treble winning side though

His numbers were pretty decent at Villa though and he was an established player at that level for a while. It was a case of Man City knowing what they were getting. His low numbers for Man City are largely due to Guardiola making him into a ‘system player’ so he’s less likely to take a man on and try to score these days.

Philogene’s had a half-season loan at Stoke and a full season at Cardiff, both with unremarkable numbers. He may well turn out to be a great player but the price we’re apparently paying for him is still a bit of a gamble.

Assists wasn't a thing until the MLS came along.
If someone makes a Glen Hoddle-esque crossfield pass, and then the receiving player taps the ball to the player next to them, who then scores from a 25 yard screamer, then the short pass is the assist

Exactly. For example this was an assist

Fee is probably on the high side, but then I think it's a reluctant sale from. Villa. Probably wouldn't be allowed to move for anything less.

He's looked very promising even though he was in a poor side at Cardiff. Made Greaves look silly a couple of times when we played them.

We've seen what can happen with a promising young player who manages to develop end-product in Josh Bowler. Also Josh King going back further. They arent all Cameron Stewarts.

I think the suggestion villa are insisting on a buy back tells us what they think of him.
