Probably the same point Steve Bruce had when he wanted to flog him to Boro the year before we sold him to Leicester, that people at the time didn't think he'd make the step up to the PL (and it wasn't an unpopular opinion at the time)

Like I said, I wasn't sure if his point was supporting yours or debating it, as a lot like to jump on the Maguire hate bandwagon these days.

If he improves as much next year as this then it will be good progress. Remember centrhalves fldont reach their peak until 27/28 so there should be a lot more to come from him in the next few years.

The early twenties are usually sticky for a CB and it doesn't usually start coming together until they get to 23/24 and as you say they develop a little later.

We've definitely got a track record of letting our academy-developed defenders go too early. Cooper, Bradley and Townsend are all ones we should've kept and it's also why the likes of Andy Smith have still got plenty of time to make the standard.

Just checked transfermarkt and they have his value rising from around 4.5m euros in Jul 22 to 11m euros currently.

Obviously it's an estimate but is still an indicator of how his stock has risen in the last 12 months.

How long do you hang onto them though? When all three of those left we were in the PL and they were nowhere near good enough to play ahead of the defenders we had at the time. They might never have become the players they eventually develop into without leaving City and having their permanent spells in the lower leagues. Sitting in our U23s and having the odd loan spell isn't great for development.

Just thinking about Greaves move from CB to LB, is that what happened to Gary Hobson, or was that the other way round? Memory like a sieve these days.

I thought the bit about being 'International class' adequately set the context.

Obviously it didn't.

Honestly I wouldn't have complained if he'd stayed another year, but you've also got to consider Elder, at the age he's at probably wants longer term security than we would be willing to offer.
