I actually feel if Seri was played further forward his eye for a pass could unlock defences, and a good defensive ball-winning midfielder would allow this to happen. Yes, we need more strength in attacking areas, but just a slight change like that could be fruitful.

That would be taking him away from what he does so well. He's brilliant at receiving the ball from the back line and getting us out through the opposition press.

I tend to agree with John, if someone else is there to win the ball, or receive it from the back to get it to a more advanced Seri, then I think he would be able to make more key passes without worrying about losing the ball so close to our box.
The key passes would have to be to players with the ability to make scoring chances. There’s no point passing it in a key area, only for it to be passed back to Seri (or worse, the keeper), & start again.

It really seems a stretch to look at it that way.

Given that our problem is creating chances, and that there's been a lack of available players in attacking areas all season, surely the absolutely obvious thing to do is address that issue; get a couple of wingers in and an extra striker and work on the injury situation so we're not constantly having to meff about with Longman or Pelkas up front or Docherty and Slater on the wings. Sort that out effectively and surely that gives us a very good chance of scoring the goals we need to turn our upper mid-table form from the second half of last season into promotion form.

The games we've lacked goals in we've generally had plenty of the ball but just lacked the attacking quality to turn it into chances and goals. It's really not the case that we sit deep and defend all the time because a lack of a big midfielder forces us to. That is fantasy stuff.
We always build from deep, the type of midfielder we lack would allow us to start the build up in better areas, we struggle to break teams down, 1, because of a lack of quality in areas and 2 because we play the ball forwards so ****ing slow that teams are already set up by the time we get to the final third.

Maybe that's how they see Simons developing?

I do see that position as key to being able to beat top 8 sides consistently enough to realistically chase promotion - but then so is a LB, RW, LW, GK and Striker.

The fact we finished pretty tight defensively (barring Sunderland and Middlesboro) under rosenior may sway decisions if budget is limited. I suspect a DM may depend on other players leaving.
There's so much chatting on here about the various positions we need to strengthen, the kind of players and the various merits of the existing players, but I've seen nothing about the need for a player who is wicked at deadball situations. Corners and/or free kicks. How many goals were scored from deadball situations last season? Not many I think.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We didn’t score a single free-kick all season. That Bardhi at Trabzonspor we’ve been linked with is pretty good at them.

Steve Bruce isn’t in charge anymore, set pieces aren’t part of our game.

Nothing wrong with the slow build up in theory when you've got the quality up top to unlock defences. There's a few problems we have with that though - We haven't had enough players trying to run past the defensive line and creating those chances. Other than Traore and probably Vaughan we don't have anyone to thread that pass through the defence, but there's been no fit striker to aim for anyways. When we go wide we have nobody to put in a good delivery. On the counter its easier, but after a slow build up the cross has to be so much better in order to work.

Must say I'm with John on this in thinking Seri a bit further forward would be worth looking at. I know he was at the start of many promising moves last season, but his occasional tendency to give the ball away and lack of pace are real issues for me in his current position, and can't help thinking he'd have a lot more assists if tried further forward. But an expert coach would no doubt tell me there's a good reason why he plays where he plays!

Said it before we never attack the back of the box or back post on corners - sick of seeing it for years

Want to add to this, the reason Christie is so good for us is because he ignores all of the above and just runs the ball into the box himself, causing mayhem. In the chaos he either puts a good pass on to someone like Oscar, or he has a go himself. It's pretty much what Vaughan is happy to do as well, which is why he'll come good for us providing he stays fearless.

I've been away for a couple of weeks, someone said Connelly's gone back to BHA...Not expected to be back. I'm assuming this is gen.

Good point. Being decent from set pieces could be worth as many points as a **** house DM in the greater scheme of things.

That's twice a manager has been linked to us in the last two weeks.

I wonder if it's a mistranslation on their end and he's coming in as a staff role that's not the manager? No way is Rosie leaving unless he gets a better offer elsewhere and as of right now, that isn't the case.
No staff role . Campelos is coming from a great season at Chaves and he wont be understudy to no one.
