Insightful - thanks for that - didn't realize the percentage of Greek Cypriots was almost 4/5 before the invasion.

The Turks invaded becase the Greek Cypriots tried to become part of Greece rather than stay independent after the coup. Its ridiculous they haven't withdrawn and reunited the Country.

I was in Northern Cyprus for the first time earlier this year after being Cypus proper many times over the years.

I liked it a lot and am going back on Saturday.

Funnily enough, most Turks today have little Central Asian Oghuz DNA. They are, for the most part, descended primarily from Anatolian Greeks who assimilated to Oghuz Turkic culture and converted to Islam in the centuries following the Byzantine loss of Anatolia.

The average Turk is closer genetically to the Greeks across the Aegean than they are to their linguistic relatives in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
