There is no Turkish Embassy in the Republic of Cyprus; Turkey is an occupying force of 40% of the country so as OLM alludes to the welcome would not be a traditionally Cypriot hospitable one.
Turkey, unsurprisingly, has an Embassy in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, but they are the only country that do. No other country recognises Northern Cyprus as being legitimate.
A strip of land between the two countries is administered by the United Nations.
Britain retains two Sovereign airbases in the Republic.
And that's that.

I hope that he didn't try to land at Akrotiri or his plane will probably be a smoldering husk by now.

There’s been loads of occasions when I’ve gone to say, a cupboard, opened it and stared into it, before then realising that I had no reason at all to go in there nor any recollection of deciding to go there.
Daughter was based at RAF Akrotiri for a few years, there’s a very big Russian community living in Cyprus, all dirty money, but I suppose Cyprus needs it, there’s also a very active spy network from the Brits monitoring the ****ers, by all accounts the Russians are a set of ****s, as we all know now.
Once, while on holiday at the Four Seasons in Limassol, I started chatting to a Russian bloke at the poolside bar. He said he'd bought a villa the day before and went out to celebrate, only he got so pissed, he couldn't remember where it was, so had booked into the hotel for the night.
He told me he was in the second hand phone business, then I heard him telling someone else he was in the property business, he was most definitely in the sort of business you don't tell people about. Very generous though, he kept buying everyone round the pool drinks and it was about forty quid a round.

Hmm, so the island that was part of the Ottoman Empire since 1571 and leased to Britain in 1878, then becoming part of the British Empire in 1923 by an unwilling Turkey having to sign the Treaty of Lausanne solely because of its defeat in WW1, is considered to be occupied illegally by Turks??? Didn't that 1974 invasion happen because of a preemptive Athens-backed coup to annex the island and make it solely a part of Greece?
It may have been occupied by various empires at different times, but it’s always been predominantly a Greek population. The Turkish Cypriots actually wanted it to remain part of the British Empire, rather than being given independence.
I used to live with a Greek Cypriot in Woodgreen, one side of the road was all Turkish Cypriots and the other was all Greek Cypriots and neither would ever shop or dine on the other side of the road.
I guess this is the pointless bickering part of the thread and not the summer transfer part

Insightful - thanks for that - didn't realize the percentage of Greek Cypriots was almost 4/5 before the invasion.
