That sounds familiar. ;) We can though, we could just put triggers for payments in, as I think you suggested when I made the point you've just made! E.g. when Halil makes his 50th league appearance for us.. things like that.

Which they would have to accept.

Brentford never seemed keen to let him go permanently so they're going to want guaranteed money. That's completely different to Fenerbahce who have helped us out massively all summer. We got Tufan for a nominal initial fee, Allahyar for half price and Pelkas on loan with them covering a big proportion of his wages.

It was never really in Brentford's interest to loan Halil with an option to buy

We could still trigger the option, but there's no guarantees a player would agree terms. Suspect if a PL club indicated a loanee with an option would play if he came back, it would make agreeing terms with the player more difficult.
Depends on the player really.

The initial conversation was about Baxter and he's a player who has openly admitted that his goal is to play for Chelsea. That's fine, completely understandable as they're his team. My point was that if Chelsea tell Baxter he'll be their no.2 he won't be staying with us.

We could only do that if the selling club agreed to that payment schedule, and as the bulk of many transfers cost is wages, ive never heard of a player agreeing to a nominal salary to rise exponentially based on triggers, but as always, there are exceptions - developing players usually, or those with fitness issues on a pay as you play - but again that leaves us vulnerable to being outbid.

You've never heard of players having bonuses in their wage? It's reasonably common for players to have a base wage with add-ons including appearances, goals scored, clean sheets, etc.

Yes, a bonus package. On top of a realistic basic wage, not a nominal starting rate. As I've added above though it would leave us vulnerable to being out bid if someone offers more guaranteed earlier in the deal.

The discussion was about transfer fees and not wages.

It was surrounding Salah I believe as Arsenal wouldn't let him go permanently, but eventually gave into a loan to buy. My point was that they wanted to keep some control as if it was a straight permnanent and they were happy to sell we could have tweaks the terms to get it through FFP. I assumed it would be a 6 figure fee so not excessive

We.clearly had the headroom to do the deal. Looks like Brentford didn't want the option and we didn't want to be adding value to someone else's asset.

Brentford know when to sell so like us they clearly believe his value will increase and Brentford want to be the recipients of that.

I don't expect any favours from they, we didn't do them any for KLP, so I wouldn't expect any back.

It doesn’t matter if you miss by an inch or a mile, missing’s missing.

At the moment Williams offers little that Longman doesn't offer when fully fit except pace, and Longman is a tad more disciplined when it comes to defensive shape and there's more end-product.

Not to say Williams won't be a decent championship winger, but he isn't the finished article yet having not played much above L2.

I would be surprised if Williams made a career in the championship. Longman is already a championship standard player and could well make a premier league regular if he gets games and becomes more consistent. His miss the other day doesn’t worry me.

Keep the faith

Be a good move for him, Duff is a good manager and they’ll be a top 6 pushing side

I agree it would do him the world of good a full season under his belt and hopefully helping them get up to the championship would really give him confidence.

Then he could really settle into a full season of games in the championship if they decided to keep him, can't be with us as we will be in the prem.
