If Downie says we are not looking to strengthen cm we must be very confident that gertruida is going to sign
I don’t think signing Geertruida influences our midfield decisions to be honest. He can play there but we didn’t utilise him there much at all. I suppose it would potentially free Hume to fill in but again, I doubt we see that as a realistic option.
Signing Geertruida really strengthens our defensive options and I think he’s likely to be seen as first choice RB if he does sign but isn’t a big factor in midfield recruitment decisions.

I wonder what postiton we will strenthen first?
We’re probably negotiating for five or six positions and probably a couple of players in each. Will be a fair bit of juggling around and will depend what drops in to place first. Although we have priority positions as fans the club will be pragmatic about the order as it doesn’t really matter.

Julio Arca joked “good luck” to any defender facing Brian Brobbey in the Premier League after delivering his verdict on the impressive Sunderland striker

https://www.sunderlandecho.com/spor...rca-brian-brobbey-sunderland-transfer-8643912

The former Black Cats favourite was speaking on The Echo’s Disco Pants Podcast when he was asked about Brobbey’s impact during Sunderland’s historic Premier League campaign. Brobbey grew in influence during the second half of the season, with his strength, hold-up play and raw power becoming increasingly important to Régis Le Bris’ side...

Asked whether Brobbey looked horrible to play against, Arca said: “Good luck. I mean, he seems to be getting stronger and stronger. I never see him in person, but you can see that he looks like a strong guy. I played with players like that before. One that reminds me of him is, I don't know if you remember, a player called Yakubu.

“He was like that. I mean, I used to train with him every day. And he was one of those players that you don't want to get close to him, it's just in case he gets injured, because they have so much power. And you can see that, you know, big centre-backs trying to deal with him.

“You can only hold two or three players sometimes. And it's good, you know, when you're under pressure, you can hit that long ball and can hold the ball, give you a break. So, yeah, he's been good. And also, he's been doing as good as he can, because he wants to get in the national team as well, you know. So, that's why he's been pursuing to get to the World Cup.”

Brobbey’s emergence has been one of the more significant developments in Sunderland’s squad planning. His profile appears to fit what Le Bris wants from a lone striker, particularly in games where the Black Cats need an outlet to relieve pressure and bring others into play. However, Arca believes Sunderland could still look to add another option in attack this summer, particularly if Le Bris wants flexibility or the ability to play with a different type of forward. Asked what he would like to see Sunderland do in the transfer market, Arca added: “I see probably up front.

“I know they've got some good players. I would probably, a different kind of striker that could play alongside the strikers that you've got at the moment. I think if everyone else stays in the team, it's not many. Yes, the wings, probably another centre-back, just in case, obviously, things happen with the centre-backs. I think left-back, right-back, you more or less have cover. But again, it all depends if every player stays in the team.”

Sounds like Brighton have had Spurs' pants down a bit

@dimitrismanakos
Brighton have just delivered a masterclass in negotiation with Jan Paul van Hecke.

▪️ Player wanted to leave
▪️ Rejected three contract offers
▪️ Had just one year left on his deal

Yet Brighton still managed to:

✅ Secure a fee of almost £55m
✅ Include a 20% sell-on clause
✅ Control the terms of the deal from start to finish

A player heading towards free agency has become the club’s 5th most expensive sale ever.

Another case study in smart football business from Tony Bloom and Brighton. ⚪

I rate Van Hecke, he's the no.1 dutch centre back for me. But that is pretty shocking. He has to work instantly for it to be money well spent.

Wonder where Romero ends up...
