Philogene is much harder to replace than Greaves for me. Greaves is the more developed player but 12 goals and 6 assists from a winger who missed a fair chunk of games is huge.

Think given the money it’d be fairly straightforward given they should’ve been sounding out replacements since Jan

We need the money spread over multiple positions. A winger who guarantees those stats would be very expensive so doubt it’s straight forward.

We’d not be recruiting a replacement domestically i dont think, also no signing guarantees a level of stats.

True but we paid £5 million for Philogene, which is the highest transfer fee for a single player under Acun. That was a lot of money for us at the time. We expected goals and assists for the money we paid. Philogene could’ve turned out to be an expensive dud like Sinik.

Without the money to reinvest, there's no chance of promotion. We wouldn't be able to sign Delap or Morton, and it would be another summer of penny-pinching and relying on loans

And the players aren't turning down huge PL money.

Selling players is a key part of being successful at this level so I don't know why there's a resistance to seeing players go

'Another summer'? Which summer was that? We signed Philogene last summer for 5m.

We'd have to be signing a Whittaker or Hutchinson to get 'guaranteed' goals. Someone whose done it this season.

I think Willock on a free and a few million on Karamoko Dembélé would be good replacements as winger options if Philogene is sold. Dembélé’s had a good season at Blackpool and I’m confident he’d be more impactful than Lokilo. Willock has experience at this level and has 4 goals and 4 assists in a QPR team that were dogshit until Cifuentes was appointed and they’re currently in that weird transition season we were last season when Rosenior joined after Shota was fired. Willock’s best season was the 21/22 season when he got 7 goals and 11 assists which is equal goal contributions to Philogene this year.

Remember, Philogene didn’t pull up any trees at Cardiff and Stoke. I don’t agree with Brady that Philogene is harder to replace than Greaves. Getting a winger with a good return on goals and assists is always a gamble but there’s a wider pool of them to sign. Greaves is harder to replace because he’s a ball-playing left-footed centre-half with a high ceiling. There aren’t many of them around. There’s always tricky, pacy wingers who like cutting inside knocking about in League One and abroad that are worth taking a punt on though.

Willock is a lot older though, I'm not sure he'd step back up next season to replicate Philogene's contribution.

I meant at this level
Greaves should be in the prem now

We can get promoted without having an excellent defender like greaves
Easier to replace in terms of championship level

And i think philo will have an even better season next if he stays

Also proven attackers are far more expensive

I disagree. McLoughlin next to Jones and no Greaves is a much worse team overall than no Philogene.

Well i wouldnt want it to be mcloughlin who i dont rate
We can spend on a defender

Since greaves is going
Anyway

Willock’s only 26 but I get your point. However, that’s why I think we should sign someone like him who can get goals and assists at this level on a free and spend a few million on someone younger like Dembélé who could potentially be the next Philogene, or someone like Poku from Peterborough.

Wonder if Rak-Sakiyi is available or could be included in a Philogene deal.

Are we ruling the chance of a new goalkeeper arriving this summer out? Surely Rosenior can see Allsop isn’t the one for where we want to be and obviously something going on with Pandur.

Does anyone know what the guaranteed monies for Jaden was and what was bonuses? Seems unlikely it was a flat £5m guaranteed.

We skimped on pretty much every other position to sign him, a gamble on a injury prone full back, a winger who'd had a decent few months in Turkey and 2 young loanees from PL clubs who'd certainly not ripped up the division. Along with gambling on an up and down Connolly, and a keeper that struggles with his hands.

Don't get me wrong, on the whole it worked well but I wouldn't fancy trying our luck again.

Signing anyone from P'boro is like pulling teeth so I doubt that's an option.

It's quite funny that they've got Edwards, Burrows, Poku, JCH, Randall and Mason-Clark and they still can't get promoted. Many of those would improve us

If any of it was bonuses I dare say we've paid it.

Yeah, but if they **** up play-offs again I can see them having to sell some of those players to a Championship or even Premier League club. Any of Poku, Edwards and Burrows would improve us. I’d rather us sign Burrows over Giles permanently, for example. Poku and Edwards wouldn’t be cheap by any stretch but would still cost a fraction of what we’d get for Philogene and Greaves.

One name I’ve thought about regarding a potential Greaves replacement, who can also play left-back, is Anselmo MacNulty at PEC Zwolle. Had a good season in Eredivisie by all accounts, is only 21-years-old, left-footed modern centre-half, capped by Ireland u21s and would be a cheaper option to Cashin, Edwards or Clarke-Salter as a left-sided centre-half.
