Hull City are in talks with Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers over the signing of skipper Lewis Travis as the club look to bolster their ranks in the final 10 days of the transfer window.

City are expected to be one of the most active clubs before the transfer window closes next Friday night and have a host of positions they're looking to recruit to give Tim Walter the squad he believes is capable of challenging.

The Tigers have so far signed nine players this summer with three more added to Walter's ranks on Friday ahead of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Plymouth Argyle, with Charlie Hughes, Mason Burstow and Oscar Zambrano all in the travelling party at Home Park, with Burstow coming off the bench for a 30-minute cameo appearance.

Travis, a defensive midfielder, has played more than 200 games for the Ewood Park club after arriving from Liverpool in 2015 and remains a key part of life at Rovers under John Eustace.

It's understood Rovers would be tempted to part with the 26-year-old who can play across the midfield, but the two clubs are some way apart in their respective valuations at this stage, though there's confidence at City that a deal can get done.

He spent a spell on loan at Ipswich Town last season helping the Tractor Boys win promotion to the Premier League having fallen out of favour under Jon Dahl Tomasson. But Travis has significant Championship experience with more than 200 second-tier appearances under his belt, scoring six goals and notching 12 assists.

The Tigers are also hopeful of signing 21-year-old Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta from German champions Bayer Leverkusen, with Puerta told he is free to leave the BayArena. City face strong competition from Scottish club Rangers and Swedish outfit Brondby for his signature amongst others, but talks are continuing over that deal which it's thought would be temporary with an option to make it permanent.

Having been signed by Xabi Alonso in January 2023, the young midfielder has only made 10 appearances for the club and spent a spell out on loan with FC Nuremberg before returning to be a part of last season's historic title-winning campaign in the Bundesliga.

City have enquired about Hamburg's defensive midfield general Jonas Meffert, a player Walter knows well, but that deal at this stage is a difficult one with the German giants unwilling to sanction his release. The 28-year-old, who is thought to be keen on the move, played 64 minutes in the 7-1 thrashing of SV Meppen in the German Cup on Sunday.

Reports linking City with a move for Stoke City defender Ben Wilmot, however, are understood to be wide of the mark at this stage. But the club remain in discussions with another winger and striker with a desire to get those wrapped up as quickly as possible and add to Walter's attacking arsenal.

Looks like Travis instead of Meffert then. Good age with lots of championship experience and captain of Blackburn. Will have to adapt to Walters system though.

Puerta looks like another exciting one, but could go either way. Signed by Alonso and a year training under him, so you'd think he has something

Why would they sell Travis?

I think comparing anyone to Seri’s ability on the ball is unfair at this level Shark. He’s better than a lot of holding midfielders in the premier league on the ball, anyone who “replaces” him won’t be anywhere near as good but unfortunately Walters system would expose him to frequent transitions which as we saw under Rosenior did cause us alot of trouble
We hear this a lot, about how good Seri is on the ball, but it would help to be clearer about what that means. If you want a player who will help you retain possession, and move the ball efficiently from side to side, then he's probably the best in the squad. But if you look more closely at what Seri does with the ball, that's when it's more questionable (at least for me). I looked at Key Passes (passes leading directly to an attempt on goal) per 90 stats for last season. Seri was ranked 177 in the Championship. Just looking at City players who played at least the equivalent of 10 matches (i.e. more than 900 mins) then he was behind (in order) Twine, Carvalho, Philogene, Traore, Tufan and Morton. Seri was equal 7th, with Ryan Giles. Of course Seri was playing deeper which has some effect, but even so I would have expected better stats than that.
