Edwards was in the last year of his contract though and with add-ons can apparently go as high as £8m
They'd still have got comp though in a years time which would've been in the millions. The money touted for Hughes seems a fair deal then, the add-ons never really worry me as they only get triggered if the signing works and if it does he'll be worth a lot more than £5m.
More buying clubs affected significantly by ffp this year though. Wouldn't be surprised if from UEFA qualification and down if transfer spend was significantly on a downward trend from last year. There isn't the same money swashing about so far this window.
Comp is rarely in the millions. The arbitrators weight the balance towards the players right to earn, as much - if not more than the clubs valuation. The pragmatic tribunal decision is almost always "if you value him so highly, offer him the contract he's worth", which donor clubs are almost always unable or unwilling to do. Too young to remember the Ince settlement by any chance? Now what I like about this Hughes character as much as anything, he's widely regarded to have signed an extension when he could have walked for free, to guarantee his club a better fee. That shows integrity. And we've just lost a centre half with similar integrity. Wherever they go, both players will have left tangible legacies at their parent clubs.
Where do we think Ömür is going to play this season? It seems like people expect him to play centrally and aren't considering him part of the equation for wingers, but Walter plays a 4-3-3 with no number 10 position doesn't he? I doubt he'll be one the three midfielders so I imagine he'll have to be wide right?
They're all gonna rotate mate, so it's not worth thinking about too much. Not in traditional terms anyway
That's fine, but if we're saying we need a right winger then we are talking about positions, and that seems like Ömür's most likely one.
At a guess he’ll start on the wing but naturally come inside with the benefit of Drameh/Giles’ attacking nature.
Not really. They'll be constantly swapping. So maybe a right footed winger and a left footed winger will spend time on either flank, and potentially through the middle, depending on the pattern of play. Walters style is all about movement and rotation. You might start somewhere but it's not necessarily where you'll end up. The key to it is going to be having players comfortable in multiple positions but also to be able to find a shape very quickly when the ball turns over. It's gonna be interesting, whatever happens.
You keep saying this, but has it ever been a situation quite like this one? 18 (soon 19) out. 14 of those being last season's1st team squad players. The remaining thin core being massively lacking and totally unbalanced (4 LB's, 3 keepers, etc). 1 new face in with only 2 weeks left. A new set of coaches with a very different style to implement. Some are now talking as if Hughes and Millar are effectively done. Is that the case?
Hughes & Miller should be with us by the end of the January window judging by how long it takes us to do business. Repeating myself but we need another 12 players hopefully 6 in before the Bristol game and the rest by the end of the window. Ain’t gonna happen.
There is supposed to be one today, which would take us to three if you count Giles. I can see three coming in next week and maybe another before Bristol which would be seven. Seven across August through to the end of the window isn’t impossible.
