Presumably long term. They would have had the advantage of being allowed to do it whereas the premier league have said No to such deals edit: apparently it is a loan. Seems odd they can register a loan outside of the transfer window. I know free transfers can
I believe it is due to a clause that allows players to move if wages arent paid. Imagine it is only a loan as the player wants to assess options in the summer but play regularly and get paid until then
So that may be a loan ahead of a permanent deal to someone in the window then? Or should I get all upset that we've lost out on someone I didn't even know was on our radar until reading this thread?
I see Vestergaard is now being marked for a move in the summer to Everton. Joining that club a;ways seems to be part of the slippery slope downwards
PL have banned clubs from signing players from Russia and Ukraine until the summer. He was always going on loan somewhere first.
Yes it was more I didn’t think registrations could happen outside the window unless they were free agents. Loan or otherwise And a loan to a top European team just makes it more likely he ends up there long term than if he had gone to Brazil as originally rumoured
Just read article on Athletic on new owners model including more experienced as well as young players, being in market for players over £15m, plus positive effect of a good run in, financially at £2m a place and in terms of showing our potential to new signings
First up going to preface my thoughts by saying that you don't need to just buy players over £15m in order to get good players. However, one would hope that we can stretch significantly more than that now if we deemed it necessary. 'Over' £15m wasn't out of our reach before we got taken over (admittedly dependent on selling). £15m - £20m was what we were paying for the exciting but unproven talent about 10 years ago. I guess on the other hand we aren't going to come out being all billy big bollocks because then the clubs we are trying to deal with are probably more likely to try and up their selling price. Only way we are really going to know how strong our hand is in the transfer market under this new ownership is when the summer window has shut imo.
Over 15m was absolutely not what we were paying for exciting and unproved talent 10 years ago. 10 years ago was the promotion season. 9 was the first back in the premier league where we apparently spent exactly 15m on Osvaldo If you want to say that is more like the equivalent of 20-25m today then you would have a point but that isn’t what you said We seem to have gone to 16 a few times over the past 5 or so years but only got close to or over 20 with Carrillo, Vestergaard and Ings There are suggestions we lost out on (or didn’t even get a chance to negotiate with) players due to various unofficial caps and limits. Maddison , Cucurella are two. And I gather because we didn’t big high enough fro Sangare the WP issues stopped him coming. And it seemed like we were only 1 or 2m short there. And Cucurella was also 1 or 2 over our apparent threshold So it appears to have made a bigger difference than people might realise. And that also seems to pour some cold water over claims it wasn’t out of our reach. Clearly some players were Another example is likely Broja - we simply didn’t have the money to try and buy him permanently before he signed permanently Whether sales first is also important is another issue. The delay in the Vestergaard sale meant we had no chance of going for either of the two defenders Palace signed. And we were linked with Guehi and again he went for closer than 20m than 15m i believe. Not only did we get neither, nor could we apparently have gone in for one anyway but we signed someone for half the price This is mostly based on rumours but there is enough out there to suggest there really were limits and restrictions and they really did have an impact and that if this new focus is true then it might well be just enough of a difference to tip things positively in our favour I am interested in the part where experienced players are not being ruled out. I think everyone would like some more grit and experience through the spine of the team. A partner for Salisu for starters. Maybe a goalkeeper but experienced and “better than what we currently have” really won’t come cheap at all
I did say about 10 years ago as a 'ball park' because I couldn't be bothered to go back and check who we signed when. A year or two doesn't make much difference to what I was saying. You've done your research and come out with we signed Osvaldo for £15m 9 years ago which basically backs up my point. I also said over £15m wasn't out of our reach in recent years, I didn't say we frequently shopped over £15m or that we could pick and choose when we did, so again you've backed up my point with picking out some examples of us spending more than £15m on players. So now we can spend 'more than' £15m 9 years after signing a player for £15m is hardly a statement that we are shopping in a bigger pool now. Granted if we can now afford that extra couple of million that might have been the difference between us signing our 1st choice or 2nd or 3rd choice previously then great. Also the fact that we no longer need to sell in order to buy is also a big positive moving forward. But this 'in the market for players over £15m' doesn't signal that there is going to be much of a change in our abilities in the transfer window. Just to clarify, as I'm pretty sure I don't think particularly differently than you do about any of this, that doesn't mean we aren't going to see benefits to having a few more million to spend here and there, just that it doesn't seem to suggest there will be much of a change in the sort of player we are looking at. Anyway, the statement doesn't tell us a whole lot. We are not going to come out and say the most we can spend on a player or what our total budget is. If we can sign 3 or 4 players 'over £15m' that will make a difference to us (if we can get the signings right). Whole lot of ifs and buts at this stage. We have also signed experienced players occasionally anyway so even that doesn't tell us anything new. Like I said before, the only way we will really know where we stand with the new ownership and our abilities in the transfer window is at the end of it.
The thing on the experienced players is that it just seemed like that wasn’t going to be the direction based on the interviews post takeover by Semmens. So it might not be new compared to what we currently do but it does seem to be different to at least what i gathered the plans were going to be from interviews
