For his main club career he appears to have only played centre back.

Maybe, a very slim maybe, but it would be a big gamble, and they aren't prepared to gamble.
Investing in the team puts up the debt = puts up the asking price (they aren't demanding their valuation of the club,simply the alleged debt owing to them).
Nobody is going to pay the £50 million currently being demanded, that's already being proven, never mind amounts above £50 milllion .... unless perhaps we get ourselves into a nailed on auto promotion place. It isn't going to happen.
Their tactics are obviously to hope to unearth more gems like Bowen for next to nothing, and hope that as a minimum we survive in the CCC, and maybe even get incredibly lucky.
Having said that, I will be baffled if they don't sell at least Bowen this summer, in order to get the 'debt' (and therefore the asking price) down ... unless of course it's simply that no one is willing to pay a reasonable price for him.

Based on the players we have signed to date. It is very clear Darnbrough has had roughly the square root of **** all to do with signing these players other than providing some back office support.

We were interested in him after the Euros, when Slutsky joined. He'd be great depth for us, but he'll get a lot of attention from other Championship clubs and the SPL.
He's got a worse goal scoring record in the Championship than Will Keane and that takes some doing.
