I suppose the good thing if we have to go down that route, buying younger players from lower levels, is that they will be keen. What we definitely do need is a Ashbee "type" character. Someone has to look after these "kids" which is where we have failed this season. We've all said we need a leader win the pitch which we've been sadly missing. Someone like Charlie Adam would fit the bill but wages again would stop that happening.

You can get bargains. Norwich got Pukki on a free, their other forward who scored regularly cost £1.5 million, a bargain in current prices but about double what we will pay. Their goalie was a free. Two players of their who were in the PFA team of the year along with Pukki came through the ranks.
They had a number of loan players as well. They had to raise £30 million to prevent going into administration. They raised £30 million on the sale of Maddison and Rhodes and got Rhodes Black on loan. They only spent £5.4 million after those sales. But their wage bill was £20 million so we can't compete with what this season's surprise team did as that wage bill is beyond what their owners were willing to fund.
And, they have a good youth and scouting set up with owners who are fans and who have sensible ticketing arrangements, which Ehab will say is no good, which means it is 15 seasons ago when they averaged less than 24,000.
Can't see us competing even as well as we did this year. Think it will be season of struggle. Though I hope I am wrong. But I can't see Adkins, or anyone else, pulling the irons out of the fire like he did this year.

Theres always 'bargains' and good deals to be done, that's always been the case, however what this market represents invariably is talent that is unproven and likely to not have experience at Championship level. By it's very nature it's more risky and therefore some may not be able to step up.

If we are 'fishing' in lower leagues its absolutely fundamental we support such players with a smattering of experience otherwise we I fear are in for a season of struggle. For that reason I'd pay slightly more in wages in an attempt to get the likes of Elphick and Pugh onboard and fight tooth and nail to hang onto Campbell.

Agree. One of the clown presenters on RH Sportstalk has said on a few occasions that Norwich got £20 million for Maddison and spent shed loads. More than one person pulled him up on that, quoting the figures more or less that I used. He then said they had an £8 million striker playing that week. They didn't, they had someone who was once valued at that on loan. When that was pointed out he said that he was on £40,000 a week. Wasn't going to admit he was wrong. If Rhodes was on £40,000 a week the £2 million in his wages, which gave experience and complemented loan signings (loans from in the main higher clubs and not lower league ones), cheap transfers and those who came through the ranks was money well spent and has been repaid one hundredfold.
Of course they have sensible owners and, by all accounts, a very good Director Of Football.

It could potentially a lucrative pre season for the boy wonder.

£20m for Bowen, Grosiki and Henrikson. Plus a sell on from Maguire if he moves.

Pukki wasn’t that much of a bargain, he came of a free, but on £30k a week, so he’s still costing them a small fortune.

So, he is in the PFA team of the year and his goals were a major part of promotion to the PL. I would call his total cost of £1.5 million a bargain compared to a lot of our signings and those of a lot more clubs in the Championship.

He was obviously a great signing, I just meant they committed £4.5m to signing him, which tends to get lost in all the talk of him being a freebie.

Yes, I get your point, but rather spend that and get a player like him than spend a million or two on a player with less wages and get less in terms of performance.

Know a Norwich fan, owed him a favour years ago when I was out of work after I had been made redundant and he put a word in and I got a job. He says they have a very good bloke, who has had success elsewhere,(can't remember his name) who their board appointed as Director Of Football. He was responsible for getting their manager and a lot of the players they brought in.
He was wondering back in September, when they were only 1 point in front of us, if they had done right. Very pleased to have his fears shown to been unfounded.
