Perhaps he was doing it the right way by waiting for the deal to be finalised before he said anything:

I believe I did as well as I possibly could towards the end of last season.”
As for the fans, it's hardly surprising given the booing during games and the constant sniping about players. People have to realise that players are human and these things affect them.
