Lots of talk of "not spending too much" on a player or "spending less" and I don't agree with any of that talk. Let the coach and scouting teams identify the players they want and then go and sign them if the overall spend is within budget and we can afford it.

The number against the player to me is irrelevant, but I am aware that as soon as we sign someone, most fans judge them by their transfer fee. This is wrong in my opinion.

Would rather have them the other way around. Chambers has experience playing in midfield and Clyne does most of his best work on the overlap (or underlap), which he wouldn't be able to do from a more advanced starting position.

Nice idea. Although the talk is more about converting Chambers to central defender where he already plays for England U19s

Exactly, a players ability is just one of several factors which determine the overall fee.

The player and clubs situation have more influence on the cost. If you want to buy a star player of a club in a sound financial position then it's going to cost you more than a reserve player from a big club or a player near the end of his contract from a recently relegated side.

Thats why Jordan Henderson cost £20m and Jack Cork 750k

My goodness, what a comparison. Ok, Henderson is having a good season this year, but over the last two seasons, he hasn't been 20 times better than Jack. I would say that they are about on equal terms of that period with Henderson maybe edging it this year. It does show though that you can sign a bargain who is good enough for the top flight.

In the Eng u19's games I have seen he plays rb or dm. Never seen him play cb.

He has play cb a few times for our youngsters but that's because Stephens is on loan.

Are we selling Shaw? Do I care, yes. Am I worried, not too much! I don't want Shaw to go but even if he does it doesn't mean we are a 'selling club' any more than other top clubs that sell their stars just because it's good business to do so.

Ok I know we're not a top 4 club but a sign that we are no longer a club that sells its best players just to keep afloat is if we do sell a player, get good money for it and still improve as a team.

IMHO the concerns that fans of many clubs have re their club selling their best players, besides any emotional attachment, is the concern that their club hasn't got, or won't get/produce, a good enough replacement. I think Southampton have moved on from that. We do have more talent coming through and I think when we do look to buy we are becoming a more attractive club for potentially big, small or medium sized signings to consider coming to.

TBH I'm more concerned about Lalana. I know he hasn't said he wants to leave but if he has a great World Cup and links up well with Rooney Man U might be waving silly money around for him and the club would find that very hard to resist.

I hear that and that is really reassuring but i guess the club could pressurise him if they wanted the money. That would be messy and about the most stupid thing the owners could do, more so than selling Shaw. Hopefully we'll never have to see that day!

Stand corrected but still the switch appears to have been considered.

By my calculations we could sell osvaldo and shaw for approximately 40m pounds combined. I don't like seeing a key part of our team leaving anymore than the rest but selling the 2 would allow for a lot of quality to be brought in over the transfer window with plenty of money to spare to throw at lallana and co to convince them to stay.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread that i would love for Adrian Ramos (Hertha Berlin) and Valentine Stocker (Fc Basel) at saints and you can add Balzaretti from Inter at LB for 5m as a cover til Targett matures enough. All three players combined would work out at a maximum of 23m (as per transfermarkt.co.uk) and still have many moneys to throw at the rest of the squad to convince them to stay and build this potentially great team.

Rather keep Shaw.

Blimey, you sell cheap.
