I'm English. Lived in the US a long time now though.

 

Where in the US do you live mate ?

 

South Carolina. Bit of a dump, would love to go elsewhere but have a decent job here now. Last time I was looking to move I wanted to go somewhere new but the Mrs. wanted to stay put because she had two friends in town she didn't want to leave.

They both moved away a few months later .

 

I think I remember you mentioning it before actually. We had a conversation surfing at Myrtle beach

Probably. I recommend the beaches around the South of the state over Myrtle Beach. Folly Beach, Hilton Head, Isle of Palms, all better than Myrtle Beach unless you're looking for night clubs and teenage beach parties.

 

No, I prefer places that are off the beaten track. Especially for surf.

 

Don't do Myrtle then. Complete redneck trashy beach.

 

I haven't got any plans to return to the states for a while. I love California and I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could get a green card. The weather and outdoor lifestyle really suits me, although a lot of the places I usually surf there have had a problem with Great White sharks recently. Somebody was bitten at a place called San Onofre, which I've surfed loads of times, really laid back place, mellow and family orientated. Also loads of the beaches up the coast have had lots of shark sightings.

Planning a trip to Costa Rica next year. Although I was reading up some blurb on the surf scene. Advice was to keep away from river mouths after it's been raining as Crocodiles tend to gather there !!!

 

Lived there 4 years myself. Chicago and NYC.

Would I live there again? I don't think I would. There's something fundamentally wrong with the place. It's the The attitude, the way the poor and minorties are treated, the guns, rednecks, head cases...etc.

It's not all bad, but it's bad enough.

 

Me: "My magical watch says you aren’t wearing any panties."

Me: "Oh, you are? It must be an hour fast!"

 

The Dollar is God in the US and it does not discriminate if you haven't got it. You are basically on the trash heap without money and the attitude is 'that's the way it goes'. When I lived in NYC I was working for a health charity, working with street homeless. The homeless rates in NYC were atrocious at the time (97-98) and I've seen the same thing in California more recently. People literally pushing their worldly possessions around in a shopping cart. It really hit me in CA, the richest state in the richest country in the world. Places like Malibu and Santa Monica have multi million dollar houses and condos and yet people are sleeping rough yards away under the pillars under piers.

 

How many times has that line actually worked ?

 

Never used it myself. Know others that have and are still with the girl now. One got married last year and just had their first kid together

 

Yeah, nothing much has changed then. Not surprisingly!

It's the whole attitude. 'Can't afford to see a doctor?' Too bad! Same with homelessness, hunger, any kind of welfare support really.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a great believer in stand on your own two feet, etc. But there are times when some of us just can't and need a hand up. That's tough to find over there.

 

The charity that I worked for in Brooklyn was really well supported by the church and local businesses etc. But received ZERO govt funding. It was so badly needed too. We worked with street homeless providing mental health support, links to support groups, night shelters, 'soup kitchens', housing advice etc. But the work we were doing was a drop in the ocean of what was really needed.

The problem with the US is that the health care system is ****ed. If you've got the money you can get the best healthcare in the world, but if you are skint then you are just fodder. My friends in Ojai pay around $1000 pcm for basic health insurance, and even that doesn't cover a trip to the GP or basic meds. But would prevent them from getting a horrendous bill if they ever needed hospital treatment. I remember a mate of mine down in San Diego who was hosptialised with appendicitis, he spent one night in hospital and he got a $10k bill. He phoned up the hospital and insurance company and told them they were trying to rob him. They told him on the phone that if he paid $3k now on his credit card, it would be the end of the matter. So bascially they just make it up as they go along.
