Hi AG, I just want to go on record re the incident with Tash the other day. You have probably realised that i have a serious issue with racism and it is like a red rag to a bull for me. On the other hand, in hindsight I have to conclude that I handled the situation badly and was myself overly offensive to Tash in the build up to his comment re my mum. Whilst I don't condone his comment (re my mum) I accept that if I insult somebody as excitable as Tash as heavily as I did then I should expect that sort of response. I'd would take it as a favour to me if you could cut him some slack regarding that with regard to his future conduct as I feel partly responsible for the incident. As for the racial comments though he is on his own!
It's just a VPN, I use it to get around restrictions for tv shows and the like, if I'm abroad means I can watch Iplayer and the like or can use it here to watch American Hulu and South Park. Works by connecting to a server on a private connection and then all your traffic goes through that server a bit like a proxy. I gave GRB the account details so he could use it himself to watch a few shows! I know there are a few other tech savvy people on here, but feel free to delete this post if you think it could be used to the detriment of the site with banned users
Donkey Toon: That's good of you to say. Tash had already offended OT by making comments about a family member though and should have known better. Me and Leazes took into account the fact that he was provoked the first time, but he continued doing it after being warned that insults against family members and race remarks were not acceptable. Personally I don't think the Campbell comments were worse than the one he made about Laurent Robert (French ****) or that others have made (including myself) about the Welsh and Scousers for example, but racism is such a sensitive subject and the use of the word 'black' in his comment was unnecessary and ignorant, the only reason I can think of that he keeps doing it is that he wants to provoke a reaction, well he's got a reaction and he's got banned for it. ToonSi: Most VPNs are banned I think. I'm not entirely sure how they, or the bans, work, but I think it's impossible to register an account with a banned IP but it is possible to post from one. So a banned user shouldn't be able to respawn from one.
It'd be impossible to outright IP ban a VPN AG, as every time you select which server to connect to (and the VPN client I use has a list of literally hundreds of servers across the world), that server gives you a unique IP address like your ISP does, but you have to pay for a service like this and it costs per month - Mick banned the free proxies that people commonly use (I know I tried to use one to get around a block of this forum at uni!), which is what most people would try if they were banned. Technically the IP address on this very post should say I'm in Japan right now . Anyway has anyone else noticed the BBC website being down?
No worries. And in my opinion I don't think he is actually racist in the nasty sense of the word. But he doesn't appear to understand that his comments will be taken as such by many people and will offend those who feel directly targeted. Hopefully he can learn, because whilst misguided and impulsive I don't think he is in anyway malicious.
DT , you've spoke a lot of sense on here! It's big of you to apologise, even though I wouldn't say you're necessarily in the wrong. I agree with you regarding Tash, I think a lot of it is down to his age - he's not long turned an adult & was raking in money from his old job and also the fact he is still living at home - so he has all the fun of being an adult with not really many of the responsibilities. A few of my mates who chose to stay at home for uni are still like that at 21/22, whereas those who moved away had to learn to grow up a lot faster (age 18 onwards or risk offending/annoying a lot of people). At least he has 2 or 3 years to learn things on some of the people I know!
Like you say he is still young and life will hopefully teach him a few tricks. I was a opinionated gobshite at his age and whilst still opinionated I'd like to think I have learned when not to say what you think. Like they say "knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad". Hopefully he will start to learn the wisdom that needs to go hand in hand with what you think you know. And you are right there is nothing that stiffles growing up like living with your parents. The sooner you go it alone the sooner you find out the realities of life.
To be fair, when I've seen him on here, he does remind me of what I was like when I was his age, and I'm definitely a better person now for having more life experience, so I can see the same happening with him.
Seeing as this is a place for general chitty chat and a few beverages. Time to wet the baby's head! My sister had a bern last night! All healthy and stuff, so Uncle for the first time! Chuffed Rounds on me lads!!
