Yes let's not, Mentioning winning trophies when most top players were involved in that awful thing called War and Pompey had a team of men stationed in Portsmouth is poor quality.
Okay, so apparently according to you guys we're not allowed to celebrate our 1939 FA Cup win, nor our 49 or 50 league titles, nor according to you lot, our 2008 FA Cup triumph, probably not our Division 1 (as it was then) triumph of 2003.... Is there anything your jealousy and bitterness will allow us to celebrate? Very churlish of you. Also, lots of men would have been stationed in Aldershot as well, and they finished second to bottom of the Football League in 49. Explain that one?
It's gone very, very quiet, from the Saints fan in Exeter......... Did someone mention Sour Grapes in an earlier post ??? Well known quote from Basil Fawlty and Saint 'Faulty' Possum: "Don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it"........exit Fawlty and Faulty goose-stepping away..........
What trophies would those be? The war started in Sep 1939 until 1945. All our success was not during any of that period. I don't think Portsmouth even had a team during WWII.
Whereas this could never be a rational thoughtful discussion on the possibility that we might go down it has ended up with someone throwing bait into the water and away we go *sigh* - I for one think and hope with our purchases of late we stand a very good chance of staying up - hope springs eternal.
Well not by the person that began it AE. For what it's worth I doubt Southampton will go down. But they will do well to finish above last season's high.
I think 10th at best but am willing to be surprised - on a tangent could I ask for a Sticky on the prediction thread while its relevant - Woops has blown us apart with Saturdays games...........
Oh dear not the sort of reaction I would of expected from older Pompey fans. Looks like you really don't no the real history of your club. Maybe you should read up on the history and Facts when you won the trophies and the War was a key fact as well you know pm.
I also keep reading we are a new run club and have nothing to do with debt owing millions that ran our club before but ok we did buy a trophy that imploded our club but that's ok. Back if the net Woops
You're right of course. Portsmouth FC started World War Two simply because the club wanted to win a few trophies. It's not like we'd been FA Cup finalists on more than one occasion in years prior Also, you've still not answered why Aldershot finished second from bottom in the football league despite having a lot of soldiers stationed there.
I knew what Poss meant all along, after the war there was this theory that we had the pick of the players due to the military connections of the city. Not every promising footballer was demobbed in Pompey though. Having Monty as our President may have helped, who knows why he chose us? Perhaps he saw the spirit of the people who lived here after getting bombed to blazes by the Luftwaffe and thought he'd found some kindred folk. You can still see the houses in Pompey that got bombed, or rather where they were, amongst the rows of terraced identical homes you sometimes come across a newer house in a gap, detached from the rest and you think "hallo why's that house so different?" sure as eggs that's where a bomb fell.
