I knew what Poss meant all along, after the war there was this theory that we had the pick of the players due to the military connections of the city. Not every promising footballer was demobbed in Pompey though. Having Monty as our President may have helped, who knows why he chose us? Perhaps he saw the spirit of the people who lived here after getting bombed to blazes by the Luftwaffe and thought he'd found some kindred folk.
You can still see the houses in Pompey that got bombed, or rather where they were, amongst the rows of terraced identical homes you sometimes come across a newer house in a gap, detached from the rest and you think "hallo why's that house so different?" sure as eggs that's where a bomb fell.
