Simply because England turned their back on it.
Financial sector would move almost entirely from London to Edinburgh and Paris
We would retain the brightest and best of Europe who live in uk now.
England and Wales would be literally surrounded by the single market.
We would still be their closest trade partner but on unequal terms, not favouring them.

In our Presbyterian socialist Utopia there will be no right wing parties like Labour and Conservatives. There will be only nice parties like the Drugs are great party and the Peoples confederation for free pizza.

I think the point that Trev is making that if Scotland can join so easily then the Catalans could join just as easily and Spain don't want that, so they would vote no to let Scotland in, which they have stated many times already.
