Maybe not but he's been fantastic for the club and needs to be replaced with the right person.
No doubting he’s been good but what have been his main things he’s done (in his very limited time)?
Off the top of my head:
- appointed Martin
- signed Charles
- signed Manning
- signed Stewart
- signed THB, Holgate, Downes, Brooks and Rothwell on loan
- got decent fees for most of our outgoing players
As I say he hasn’t made many mistakes, but I’d argue that Stewart, Manning and Holgate probably were mistakes, or definitely can’t be considered in the “fantastic” category anyway. Charles is in the average category for me at this current moment. Getting THB was very good with the option to make it permanent, and Downes was also a very good signing for this level. I think he’s done the right thing by leaning heavily on loans to try and get us straight back up rather than spending loads on permanent signings
Obviously the direct comparison are Leeds and Leicester as they came down as well, and Leicester had a bigger fall than we did based on what they had been achieving in recent years so the whole “turned round disappointment of relegation” applies to them more than us I think. You could argue that we have had years of being ****, where as they only had one year so easier to rectify the mentality there than here, so credit to Martin/Wilcox for that.
You can argue whichever way you like about who appointed the better manager between Martin, Maresca and Farke. I’d say we got the worst of the 3 but it’s not like any of them have been bad so good appointments by all 3 clubs. You could say that the fact that all 3 of us got it right with manager shows that it wasn’t that hard or we all have very good people calling the shots.
Basically I have no idea how good Wilcox is/will be long term. He has made good decisions in his 2/3rds of a season here, but in comparison to the rest of the league he has been dealt a very favourable hand
