It’s just a career decision. He gave an ultimatum to the Allam family with a couple of games to go, saying he wouldn’t just sign a contract extension for the sake of it and that he needed to see clear and aligned thinking on how the club will approach the coming seasons.
Hull’s issues have been pretty well-documented and by all accounts the fans are fuming with the club that they didn’t show enough ambition and support for Nigel to commit his future to them.
They started the season under Adkins with a tiny squad and he went through pre-season without even having a full set of pros. There’s an expectation this summer that they’ll sell Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki, plus others, and Nigel wanted to know that he’d be given a good share of the funds to rebuild the squad, which is sorely needed as it already lacked any depth.
All the fan reaction online has been goodwill towards Nigel and understanding of the decision. But disappointment and anger at the club once again.
Andy Crosby has also left his role, following Nigel out the door.
If I were Swansea City, I’d be picking up the phone.
