I noticed a couple of posts from Saints "supporters" on other sites, saying they wished he had been sent off and had a longer suspension, what has he done to deserve this kind of response? Also that he had a bit of a scrap with Charlie after the game finished, I seem to miss all of the fun!
Berty hasn't been at his best to put it politely and made a few dreadful errors on Saturday again that nearly cost us. I think many fans are not happy with him being captain as he isn't exactly an inspiring character

I don't get the whole captain thing. These are all top level athletes, they don't (or shouldn't) need one of their team mates to motivate them and start shouting to get them fired up. The captain is just the guy who does the coin toss and can talk calmly to the ref when he is ****ing fuming. It is more symbolic than actually being a real thing

I don’t mean this to sound rude, but that is a niaive statement. You can be a very talented and top level performer in any walk of life, but still feel the benefit of a leader’s support. Even if you are indeed a leader yourself.

I wasn't talking about any walk of life. I was talking about professional football. Bertrand has been getting stick as not being a leader so we should have a new captain, I don't see what difference whoever is wearing the captains arm band makes. If there are other leaders on the pitch they aren't not going to encourage/chastise because they aren't captain.

If you want to compare to other walks of life Bertrand isn't their boss where you look to someone for leadership (that is Hughes I suppose in football), he is a team mate. Young players may look to him as he has been at the club a long time and been playing at the top level a long time, but I would expect that to be more behind the scenes rather than on the pitch (like when Kelvin was club captain). But again we have a number of players who have played at the top level for a long time so I doubt Bertrand would be the only one for this role.

I mean football too. My point still stands. It can make a difference.

I think the team needs to regain belief....like the fans, they probably almost expect things to go pear-shaped. I think we are under performing, so it is possible that an inspirational player/manager could just produce that extra 10%. However, we have no new players coming in and I don't think making someone the captain will change anything....they are leaders or they ain't.

So obafemi is heading back after the norn iron match as O'Neill said he is not ready to make a decision on his future. Elsewhere it says he is delighted to commit his future to Ireland...oneills reign of terror is getting more farcical by the day

Look what an inspirational captain can do - Mike Brierley comes to mind ......

So do you think that a change in captain will make Bertrand perform better? Or the whole team perform better if we gave it to someone who is a natural leader?

That’s not what you originally said. Below is the bit I was responding too and disagree with.
