Southampton are still working on a deal for PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo despite their impending arrivals.

The Athletic has reported that Southampton are close to signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal on loan with an option to buy, while they are also confident of bringing in Manchester City youngsters Samuel Edozie and Juan Larios.

Southampton will, however, only consider a deal for Gakpo if it remains reasonable and are not willing to overstretch themselves in pursuit of the 23-year-old.

The Athletic has previously reported that Manchester United had considered a move for Gakpo. The Old Trafford club have, though, reached an agreement to sign Ajax forward Antony.

Southampton have already signed players this summer, with Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia, Joe Aribo, Sekou Mara, Gavin Bazunu and Mateusz Lis all joining Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Gakpo came through the ranks at PSV and made his senior debut in 2018. He has gone on to play 143 times for the Dutch side, scoring 46 goals.

Last season, he managed an impressive 21 goals in 46 games across all competitions. The Netherlands international has begun this campaign in much the same vein, netting four times in his first eight matches.

Following their 2-1 win over Chelsea on Tuesday, Southampton are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Quite right too. Important to get a forward but more important to get the right one. We can’t go back to plonking down long contracts in front of players who don’t work out and can’t be sold. We’ve wasted years undoing those signings and although we have more financial muscle now, with great power comes great responsibility and all that ****. I know it would be unpopular with fans but if the right deal wasn’t available this window I would absolutely wait.

My Everton mate just messaged me all triumphant because they have beaten us to the signing of Gakpo and Garner apparently

He does seem very confused in general. We have a nice healthy bet (suggested by him) on who finishes higher out of Saints and Everton. He was kind enough to give Saints a 10 point head start aswell, he’s still very confident of winning

Oh wow. I hope you did a big stake. I'd absolutely take that bet!

Wonderful.

I have a running bet with a Brighton, Palace and Brentford fan about who finishes highest. I was slightly concerned, but beginning to feel a lot better as the window progresses.

Yes I have far too much staked this season on various bets despite my usual negative outlook. If all goes tits up could be an expensive May

Reading GOT, there's not much chat at all about Gakpo. Looks like they're after that Villareal winger who I can't spell - Chuk.....something or other. Won't sign both I wouldn't have thought.
