The original rule was that the ball had to roll it's full circumference in a forward direction for the game to start.

So, is it just the direction that is changed, ie it can now roll backwards?

Yes but that opens up all sorts of changes to the way teams will line-up at kick off. Now you dont need 2 people in the centre circle to keep possession.

Yes, but what I'm driving at is, at kick-off can the ball be pinged in the air (towards the opposition corner flag might be one tactic) rather then rolled on the floor ?

i see what you mean. i don't think the rolling bit is in the rules any more. it just had to be kicked forwards.

They could do that before the rule change. It had to travel a minimum of its circumference in distance, it didn't have to actually roll its circumference. I've seen people shoot at goal direct from kick off.

You can imagine Pulis just instructing his team to kick it straight into touch as close to the corner flag as possible and 'pin em in'...kick to touch rugby style.

One handed throws is just closing a loop hole that few people ever utilised

Stuttering / fake pens.....should remove both and just a straight run up and shoot

Why though? You can feign or stutter in normal play or at a free kick, so why should the keeper have an advantage? Its up to them not to move until the taker shoots and feigning / stuttering only started to combat keepers cheating by diving early.

if they dont dive early then there's no incentive to feign or stutter.

Keepers don't cheat by moving early, nothing wrong with that....they cheat by coming off their line which is a whole different argument.

That in itself was a rule change - late 90s I think, it wasn't allowed until then, once it came in everyone tried it for a while and then realised there wasn't much point really

And we scored within 8 seconds once.

Didn't we also get one within about 17 seconds only a few weeks before or after or have I made that up?

Rings a vague bell but the only really early goal that stick in the memory was Deano vs Bratfud after 10 seconds at a packed BP and we won 1-0.

Seem to remember Barmby scoring very early at the KC - is that the one ?

I'd like to see the following attacking kick-off:
2 or 3 players start sprinting from 30 yards inside their own half just before kick-off. Player taking the kick-off times it so he kicks the ball
just before they cross the centre line and aims for the opposition cross bar. If it's a floater rather then a pinger I reckon
the sprinters could get with 20 yards of the goal, ball hits cross-bar and bounces back in play, goalie and defenders get in each other's way,
and one of sprinters nips in and scores.

Success rate, probably 1 in a 1000 but worth a try.....<laugh>

Barmby's was the eight second one, kick off to Delaney, Delaney to Green on the wing, cross to Barmby for the goal.

Edit - Found the clip...
