River Plate

Wouldn't Man United have gone down anyway? I'm sure the 'Law sent them down' thing is a classic example of bending the truth (ask someone older though!). Seeing a Leeds or Newcastle go down really isn't the same thing, maybe even Chelsea. The only clubs you can really compare to River Plate, and their position in Argentine football, is Liverpool or Man United (at a stretch, Arsenal).
You're right, I was born in 1974 so don't really know, think they probably were down already!

Mental!

Man United got relegated in 1973-74, think it was Denis Laws backheel which sent them down which rubbed salt in the wounds, so it does happen. Liverpool looked a bit shaky recently but seem to overcome it, I was half thinking they might be the next big name to go down at one point
So was I, until the bombshell of them finishing in the top four this season.

I am pretty sure the average football fan who posts on a forum will have heard of River Plate....

Never heard of them. Now I think about it, I couldnt tell you the name of any teams outside of Europe with the exception of a couple of yank ones. Deffo no S American ones. Why would I have??

I can name quite a few. As I said before, I don't expect everyone to have heard of every club in South America, but to not know of River Plate and Boca Juniors surprises me. I'd also expect people to have heard of Sao Paulo and Santos in Brazil.

Have been relegated from the Argentine 1st Division. <yikes>

A major shock in world football, possibly the biggest since I've been following the beautiful game (along with Juventus' demotion to Serie B for match-fixing).QUOTE]

Off topic slightly but I'd just like to point out that Juve were NOT demonted for match fixing. There was zero match fixing allegations whatsoever related to Calciopoli and that is mererly a lazy, ill educated summary generated by the ignorant UK tabloid press.

What Juve, MIlan, Fiorentina and Reggiana were found guilty of was requesting that certain officiails didnt referee their matches. Nothing more, nothing less. Now since Calciopoli I have seen Alex Ferguson and Mark Hughes do the same in this country without so much as an eyebrow raised, the only difference being they did it publicly via the media whereas the aforementioned Italian teams did it via taped phone calls to the head of the Italian referees commission.

Now Im not justifying it - it is wrong to make such requests - however I applaud the Italian FA for taking the ultra tough stance and ask why the Premier Leagye failed to do so?

Yes, but they were selecting referees who they saw as favourable or as being more prone to persuasion, which is not entirely dissimilar.

I've heard of most teams in the world that are part of soccermanager.com, before that maybe not every one but definitely the big Argie teams like River Plate, Boca Juniors are another one aren't they, sometimes get confused between different countries, like trying to remember where Velez Sarsfield is right now, or even if I just made that name up in my head!

They're Argentinian. <ok>

Say what you want. Im in the B. I have a bottle of Fernet which i will finish alone. I never thought i'd live this.

Please have a little respect. When central went down last wyear people died. Various people comitted suicide. This will be worse. This will be a stain on argentine society.

For your sake this is the end of Grondona. THey will destroy the AFA tonight. The Copa America cannot be played in el monumental. That mafioso will not see a dime.

<yikes>

****ing hell!? That's a River fan!

I'm surprised there's anyone on a football forum who hasn't heard of River Plate and Boca Juniors, they're two of the most famous clubs in the world. I would have thought that even those who don't know the clubs, would know their names, due to the players that came from those clubs to Europe - Tevez, Riquelme, Maradonna, Mascherano, Higuain, D'Alessandro, Cambiasso, Saviola, Aimar, Pablo Ángel, Crespo etc.

Seriously, no. I spent 8 months in the Falklands too! I am aware of the names of some Argie cities, but their footy clubs? Nope. Well now, sure, yesterday, no, tomorrow probably not again!

Oh, forgot to type this yesterday and Im amazed noone else has...

Sooo, they were sunk by the Belgrano eh?:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Just a mention for Deportiva La Coruna too, who were relegated from La Liga. They won the League in 2000 and only narrowly missed out on the Champions League Final in 2004.
