I think it's more to do with tactical naivity. Astonishingly for experienced managers like Mourinho and Wenger they were out thought by the PSG and Monaco managers. Pellegrini and Rodgers are simply out of their depth in the CL, the former because he's useless, the latter because he's inexperienced.
Pellegrini and Rodgers were both out thought, not sure you could say that about Mourinho and Wenger.
Mourinho in particular did his tried and tested formula of getting his players to surround the ref to get an opposing player sent off, getting a narrow lead, then shutting up shop. It was the players who bottled it, which is even more amazing given Chelsea's level of experience in defending narrow leads. If there was any team you'd expect to be able to hold onto a 1-0 and a 2-1 lead at home against 10 ten men it would be Chelsea.
