It's the one thing that truly irks me about the play-off system. It would have made a mockery of the season if a 19 point deficit established over 46 games was made irrelevant over two games of football.

3rd against 4th and done. No idea why 5th and 6th merit involvement most seasons.

More games for the league to make more TV money out of.

It can't make that much difference in the grand scheme of things. Certainly not once you get down to League 2. Granted, Wembley is usually full regardless for the final but is it really worth pissing all over someone's 46-game season just for a few extra quid?

It would be much more fun if for a 10-point deficit, the team in 5th/6th started the game a goal down. Deficit of 15 points or more would mean a goal down and ten men. 20 point deficit would mean playing Eric Dier and Ryan Sessegnon in defence, etc.

I wasn't thinking of income from the games, more the revenue that the league get for selling broadcasting rights.

Either way I think my idea is both fair and fun.

12 point deficit the team has to choose between playing with their boots on the wrong feet, or playing in sandals. etc. Make them earn their right to be there.

Mainly for the quote-unquote drama

If there was only automatic promotion, some seasons the pundits would be twiddling their thumbs for the last 3-4 weeks of fixtures, which is how League One panned out with Wednesday being so far ahead of fourth-placed Barnsley

The fact that the team who got into the playoffs on the last day can beat the team who narrowly missed out on promotion, as happened to Palace years ago when Steve Claridge shinned Leicester into the PL, is considered the magic of football is certainly grating, too - mainly when you hear how it's the so-called magic of football when it looks more like football kicking someone in the teeth

IIRC didn't Blackpool get promoted to the PL having finished 6th?

Under the CK System, they would've had to play with small parachutes attached to their backs.

This is a really good idea. Just need the football statisticians to work out exactly how it should work. I would favour having to play with 10 men for some of the match depending on the points deficit. Should be an easy calculation in principle about how long for.
46 games is of course nowhere near long enough to remove the effects of luck, so having extra matches isn't unfair if the handicap is correctly calculated.

Wouldn't that technically give them an advantage given one of their stands isn't there? All they have to do is score and then stand facing the wind, so the parachutes create a wall for their goal?
