I had taken it that that the £50m represented 'new money' on top of any additional income generated from sales and wage savings. I'm not sure that it helps anywhere near enough. It's a model that we've been working to for years....without the £50m
The expression 2 steps froward and one step back comes to mind. To make it work well, you have to sell players when they're still worth something decent and reinvest that money well. That's not something that you have available to you. Most of the silverware's been sold last season. I'm reckoning Ramsey's worth £15 - 20m. Bellerin? £30m or so on current form?.....and that's it.....unless you sell the ones that you just bought, go 'all-in' on the youth team or you've got some stellar Bosman deals in the pipeline.
How long does this new manager get to deliver CL football? I reckon he'll get a bye next season but mabye, not more than 2 seasons? I don't see that as enough to overtake 2 of the teams currently finishing above you.
Skimread it and while it makes a lot sense, do you not also think the author is somewhat wishful thinking/ overcomplicating things?
When a journo reports about how much a club has to spend/ has in its budget, that's often based on what the club will spend in terms of fees in a single window, not the amount of extra money allocated towards an annual budget for wages and costs etc.

Yep. As the article mentions, the figure is moreso in relation to amortised fees for the transfer spread over the course of the contract length. This clearly means that, by the average person's understanding of transfers, we do have more than a meagre £50m to spend on players generally. Although you may feel like it's not enough, I think a lot of it depends on how we negotiate, who we sell, how many wages we can free up and whether we'd be doing any player-for-player swaps. Not only that, but I think we will now be able to observe whether some of the current crop of players are genuinely good/not good enough for Arsenal or whether they have been suffering from Wenger's chokehold. The jury is still out on this, so next season will be extremely interesting in many ways. We also have some promising youth prospects that have featured in the first-team.
Also, I think you're underestimating the value of Ramsey; 27 years old, at his peak, box-to-box midfielder, clear goal threat, technically skilled. Even with just over a year left on his remaining deal, I can confidently say we would get more than £20m for him. He is a player that would be in high demand. The only way we wouldn't is if we do a direct swap with another club. Or if he chooses to move abroad in 7 months time, but he doesn't strike me as the type of player that would want to leave England. Anyway, let's not forget the players that will, in all likelihood, be leaving by Summer 2018. Lucas Perez, Carl Jenkinson, Joel Campbell, Chuba Akpom, Danny Welbeck...this will definitely ease some of the financial burden when it comes to salaries.
Emery essentially has a 'free hit' next season as the expectations won't be too high. Although the objectives will obviously be to get back into the Champions League, he will also have the excuses of it being his first season, with a squad that, for the most part, isn't his own choice, he needs time to implement his footballing ideals onto this group of players, less money compared to the other clubs etc...if the fans get on board with his vision and we can see he clearly has a plan for what he's trying to achieve, I think he'll be given more time than you think. We just want to see some ambition and progressivism that we've not seen for many years now.
It does appear that the article is explaining how these finances are noted in the books via common accountancy principles, and I think he has a point that a headline which says we only have £50m to spend entirely will generate more clicks than if it was explained properly. But to be fair, you might be right. Either way, I guess the proof will be in our transfer activity over the Summer. In any case, it's difficult to believe that we'd only have £50m to play with (pre-sales) for transfer fees, so although I could be totally wrong on this, I am inclined to believe the OP.
I reckon you'll have more than £50m to spend to be honest but I just think the author in the article is trying to put a positive spin on the "£50m budget" rumours to make it sound more appealing to potentially worried Arsenal fans that see such a headline.
Ramsey's a complete no-no for me. He's the anti-Ozil. He seems to turn up only in big games - he's usually been decent in big cup games and in the NLD. For the rest of the season, he allows Mesut centre stage. I couldn't see a Top 6 team as being interested in him. I'd even doubt that Everton would be at this time. To me, he's a perfect West Ham player but we shall see.
The others are good for sales to fill 2 or 3 positions with young talent but not with players that could walk into a Top 4 side. We're trying to buy de Ligt and looking at £50m. You could really do with a Toby Alderweireld to get a grip of your defence, who would cost something similar. Just as the teams above you are getting their credit cards out, Arsenal are looking down the back of the sofa. It can be done but with a new manager who's never managed in this country?
How long he gets will largely depend upon how long you can stand to be without CL football? That's what drives clubs towards the top of the PL to sack managers. The money it generates is just too important. If, after 2 years. you're still not there or maybe, very close, there will be pressure to see if someone else can't do better? Liverpool went through this post-Benitez and pre-Klopp, we were very good at it and United did it with Moyes and Van Gaal. It's gonna be very interesting.

I've no idea about Chelsea. From one season to the next is impossible to predict but Arsenal have a lot to do. They've got some flair up front but need a total rebuild elsewhere. I'll be very surprised if they're not 6th again next season.

Chelsea have a very good squad and are much better than this seasons showing.
Where do you think Arsenal have to strengthen most after CB? I think they just need a good manager to make a pretty decent squad perform much much better (same as us some would say).
Arsenal are going to need a bang of nuclear proportions to improve that team enough to overhaul the 10 points plus difference between us and them.
Their only hope is that the rumours are true and we are going to sell everyone including the tea lady to fund our new stadium, apart from that, we will finish above them again. If Spurs had won a trophy or two in the last few years, it wouldn't have been a surprise because we have a top team.
It's like we are imposters and therefore always prone to dissapearing off the face of the Earth over night and those who have a God given right to claim top4 will be back to reclaim their rightful positions

1. 2015-16.
Alderweireld playing 2/3 of the PL season. No Wanyama.
GA = 35
2. 2016-17.
Alderweireld playing nearly all the PL season.
Wanyama playing nearly all the PL season.
GA = 26.
2. 2017-18.
Alderweireld playing less than a third of the PL season.

Neither goalkeeper is good enough.
Their central midfielders - Xhaka, Elneny, Wilshere, Ramsey aren't good enough.
Their forwards are lazy when without the ball. At this point I don't see Ozil, Lacazette or Aubameyang changing in that. If they were rock solld at the back then, maybe........but they're anything but.
Between you and me, I'm not crazy about the full backs either but compared to other areas, they're pretty good.
