That's exactly why he did it, meaning that Pedro will now be spoken of in the same breath as Steve Sidwell.

Afobe kept getting injury problems which stunted his development at crucial times when we thought he'd make a breakthrough. I think Wenger did want to keep him, but it was getting to a point where he wanted first team football and that, combined with his poor injury record at the time, meant that we had to cut him loose.

I did think he could have been a good player for us, but whether he would have been enough to elevate us to a higher level and play a huge role in competing for the title is another question altogether. My personal opinion is that he wasn't good enough to be first choice, but I guess we'll never find out. In hindsight, if I knew it would be a choice between Welbeck and Afobe, I'd have preferred the latter.

Yes he dived plenty at Villa too, I recall one in particular in a 3rd round FA cup tie v The Gills, it was 1-1 at the time and the game could have gone either way Villa won 2-1 as a result of the penalty he won (I may of course be biased) but it was one of the most blatant acts of cheating I have seen at Priestfield, diving is still quite rare in leagues 1 & 2

    Definitely lost the plot http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/34024188

"I'm not happy with anyone," Mourinho, who also criticised himself, said.
"I'm not happy with Branislav Ivanovic's form, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic."
Mourinho added: "I'm not happy with my form because I used to get better results than I'm getting now."

  6. The Smug One Might be making a show of criticizing himself, but one gets the feeling that he doesn't believe a word of what he's saying.

The fact is, Mourhino is being shown up for the poor manager that he is. When you have a good club, with excellent depth in quality, and it all suddenly goes wrong, Mourhino is like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

Mind you, the man is superb wumster! I'll give him that.

it depends on the reaction he gets. If he's pissed off the players he named, then it's backfired, if they go out determined to show him, then it was worth it. I personally think it's poor management to criticise players except as a last resort.

  8. Criticizing players has only ever worked for Fergie, no other manager. Think of all the top players that Fergie pissed off, and yet he was still able to instill fear in the rest of the team to force them to go out and get titles for him. All the best managers down the decades have been fearsome bullies, like The Smug One is trying to be.

What The Smug One hasn't worked out, yet, is that times have changed (which is probably one of the reasons why Fergie ****ed off when he did), and it is the player who holds the real power in a club.

He might get an immediate positive response, but I think that, over the longer term his tactic can have only a negative impact on the team.

Reece Oxford received his GCSE results this week, thus making him better educated than any of Wet Spam's supporters.

That might be the popular perception of SAF for some, but in reality he was just the opposite. He was like a father to many - supportive, encouraging, concerned, but keen to ensure that the players were disciplined and understood their responsibilities too. A number of players - Ronaldo, for example- still refer to him as a second father and credit him for making them the players they became. You don't get the best from young people by bullying them. They respond much better from being encouraged and from being made to feel valued individually and as part of a team.

Van Gaal leads his team through another uninspiring game, yet they're unbeaten and haven't conceded in the league.
The fans can't be happy watching that load of dross every week though, surely? A team that's definitely less than the sum of it's parts.

Andy Cole after being shown that Rooney was definitely, 100% offside for Man Utd's disallowed goal:
"Nah, that's onside for me." <doh>
It's off. They got a ****ing ref to explain to you why it was off and you admitted that you didn't know the rules, you moron. <grr>

Why do they keep dragging these idiots out to do such ****e punditry on BT Sport? Isn't Owen bad enough?

It's only the 3rd PL game. There were signs of improvement today - and against Bruges when Depay showed his ability. 70% possession, 20 attempts at goal, 8 on target is definitely an improvement. It takes time for players to fit together as a team, whatever their pedigree. I say this to you Spurs fans every season. Continuity generally brings consistency. When it's 7 in, 7 out, it might seem exciting because your team's had a revamp and the belief is that the new players are better than the old, but the reality is that it takes time for them to play together as a team and produce consistent performances and results. And I don't think van Gaal has finished spending yet either. A goalscoring forward would have buried a few chances today. Can he find one?

  17. It never ceases to amaze the incredible gulf in brain-power between footballers. On one side of the divide, you have player-pundits like Neville and Le Saux, who come across as incredibly knowledgeable and reasonable pundits, and over on the other side of the divide you have pundits like Andy Cole and Mickey Dim, who seem to delight in being as thick as two short planks!
