Absolutely gutted to find out that James Cowton died yesterday, competing in the sport he loved, in the Isle of Man.

He was a great lad, who'll be missed by many. Thoughts are with Chloe, Chris and Bev and all James' family this morning.

A terrible accident, involved in a four bike crash, Ivan Linton from Bardney is in a poor way too.

Never liked Leeds eiher, but I saw them when working in Leeds late 1960s. Though they were indeed a cynical lot Madeley didn't appear to get involved in that side. He seemed to glide over the pitch effortlessly. Looking like he wasn't exerting himself but you saw him break away from people or catch players up who has head start on him. How versatile he was is demonstrated by the fact he played every position except goalleeper. Not the odd one here and there as a stop gap either, he played at least 15 times in each position.
Just read where Jimmy Armfield said he called him into discuss his new contract. Madeley asked where to sign. Armfield said there easn't anything to sign yet. Just give me a piece of paper and fill it in said Madeley.
But you don't know the offer. Madeley said he wasn't bothered, he only wanted to play for Leeds. But what about the length of contract, 1, 2 or 3 years. Doesn't matter he said, I'm not going to play for anyone else.
How refreshing compared to nowadays. And confirmation stories of him being a decent bloke were true.

It's a bit of a myth they were all dirty players.
Reaney great rb. Tough but fair.
Terry cooper the same.
Eddie Gray was one of the most kicked players never mind kicking others.
Jones and Clarke up front weren't dirty.

Giles bremner hunter and jack were the enforcers. Giles and bremner dirty buggers.

Used to have a flat in Leeds near where Jack Charlton had a shop at the time. He was in there a lot during the week (how different life was for players then. Giles was working for an insurance company advising on investments and pensions, he helped make sure some of the other players saved wisely). Used to go in Charlton's shop with another City fan and ask for City gear of which of course there was none. He did tell us that he would have only have left Leeds to managd Newcastle, being a Geordie, or City and Villa as the thought us two had the most potential outside Div 1 and that he had been approached by City but he wanted to be a player manager and they said they wanted a manager only.
He thought he could carry on playing. Quite correctly as he won the Fairs Cup and the FA Cup between then and retiring and 2 Division One Runners up medals. Might have won another League title if they hadn't been made to play their last league game the Monday after the Cup Final - imagine that happening now.
Ironic with City that their next manager was Terry Neill who of course was appointed as player manager.
